Dr. Jewel Plummer Cobb was a biologist with a PhD in cell physiology. Her research focused on cancer treatments, some of which are still used today. She was the President of California State University at Fullerton, where she expanded the science and engineering programs.

Elijah McCoy was a mechanical engineer. McCoy’s most famous invention was an automatic lubrication system for steam engines, which enabled trains to travel faster. The phrase “the real McCoy” comes from railroad engineers requesting specific parts invented by McCoy instead of ineffective copies.

Do your students know about Valerie Thomas? Valerie Thomas was a data scientist at NASA and invented the illusion transmitter, which helped NASA take and send 3D images of Earth from space. This technology is still used today! She was awarded the Goddard Space Flight Center Award of Merit.

Dr. Jesse Ernest Wilkins Jr. was a mathematician and nuclear engineer. Dr. Wilkins worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II and was the second Black American elected to the Academy of Engineering. He was a distinguished professor and founded Howard University’s mathematics PhD program.

Dr. Marjorie Lee Browne was a mathematician and mathematics educators. In addition to chairing the Mathematics Department at NCCU, she was one of the first Black women to serve on the advisory council of the National Science Foundation and ran summer institutes for secondary school teachers.

Dr. Warren M Washington was an atmospheric scientist with degrees in physics and meteorology. He used computer modeling to conduct climate research, earning the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with a group of colleagues. President Barack Obama awarded Dr. Washington the National Medal of Science.

Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson is a marine biologist with expertise in ocean conservation and public policy. Her work combines ocean conservation, climate change, and social justice. She co-founded the Urban Ocean Lab to provide policy insights for coastal cities.

Dr. Walt Braithwaite is an engineer with degrees in engineering, computer science, industrial management, technology and business. He is known for designing the first “paperless plane” due to his contributions to computer-aided design (CAD), software that allows designers to create digital plans.

Dr. Marie Maynard Daly was a biochemist who made important contributions to medicine. She was the first Black woman to earn a PhD in chemistry. Her work spanned biochemical processes including protein synthesis, the relationship between cholesterol and hypertension, and creatine uptake.

Leland Melvin earned his bachelors in chemistry and his masters in materials science engineering. Melvin was a professional football player, a NASA engineer, and astronaut, logging more than 565 hours in space. This photo of him with his rescue dogs went viral.

Dr. Marian Croak earned her Ph.D. in Qualitative Analysis and Social Psychology. Dr. Croak holds over 200 patents, pioneering Voice Over Internet Protocol, which enabled phone calls via the internet (making calls in WhatsApp, Google Voice, etc), leading to video conferencing.

Dr. Charles Drew was a surgeon and conducted medical research, specifically how to improve blood transfusions. Dr. Drew protested segregation of blood based on race, due to the lack of scientific evidence that blood was different based on race.

Dr. Gladys Brown West was a mathematician. At the Naval Surface Warfare Center, she was known for her skill in calculating complex mathematical equations and excelled in computer programming. She helped create the Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite system.

Dr. David Harold Blackwell was a mathematician, who contributed to game theory, probability theory, and information theory. He was head of the Mathematics Department at Howard University and the first Black man named to the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Euphemia Lofton Haynes was the first Black woman to earn a doctorate in mathematics. She helped reform the segregated D.C. public school system. She also helped create the mathematics department at Miner Teachers College, which is now the University of the District of Columbia.

Do your students know about George Washington Carver? Often associated with peanuts, Carver helped transform former cotton fields to food crops such as legumes and sweet potatoes. He applied principles of chemistry to regenerate the soil.
