Needs suggestions for a new show to stream. Must have at least three seasons with complete story arcs. Any platform will do. Not interested in violence for violence sake. Ideas?
Today’s strands. Seriously @nytimes.com?

Getting prepped to close out 2024 and start 2025 in my reading journal. I decided to use the 52 Book Club challenge to guide some of my reading. The goal will be to pick books from my existing e-book library.

Not sure what my total goal for 2025 will be… tonight is for reflection and journaling.

Day one of new year:

Watched more news, not less as intended. 💔

Read for a bit: late to it, but currently reading Project Hail Mary (no spoilers, please)

Watched UT nearly get clobbered 😳

And walked for 30 minutes.

What’s the best way to use AI in lesson planning for teaching writing. Remember students use AI to complete assignments. Looking for ideas. Put your suggestions below. #teaching #teacher #Englishteacher #writing

Sitting in the parking lot at my kid’s HS. I am really impressed by a teen’s ability to carry more bags than is humanly necessary for a day of school while still having one hand completely free to check their phones. This generation will all be hunchbacks by 30. #teaching #Englishteacher #teacher

NYT Connections: the fastest way to undermine my own intellectual instincts. Those four “mistake” buttons are the triggers of paralysis. Anyone else? Just me? The AI is totally training my behavior #writer #teaching #communication #AI

Grading final essays. So. Much. AI. It’s truly awful. No voice, predictable and rhythmic construction and organizational pattern, and limited lexicons for topics. Folks: read what the AI makes. Ensure that it reflects your intended message. Put your personal stamp on the tone. Vary the wording.

How is it already a week into December? Where did this year go?

It takes THIRTY-SEVEN clicks to turn the captioning on and off on the Direct TV/ATT streaming service. 37! That is ridiculous. Even getting accessibility isn’t accessible.

Are you using grammar checkers to restructure your sentences? That’s AI. Do you reread them after in context to make sure the changes still convey your intended message? That’s keeping the human in the mix. #softskills #communication #Englishteacher #writing #AI

Remember, the AI works for you, not the other way around. You have to tell it exactly what you want and then you have to check its output. It’s not really “intelligent.” In fact it has no Emotional Intelligence at all. #AI #Englishteacher #writing #softskills #communication

Folks should think of AI like and employee, not a boss. You tell it what to do, you supervise, and you review it for accuracy. It’s a great place to start, but where it ends requires a human touch. EQ and soft skills are more important than ever. #Englishteacher #AI #teaching #classroom #writing

Basic communication skills can be enhanced with AI but they cannot (yet) replace human interpersonal relationships. Humanities teach soft skills. Those English classes you blew off in college are about to become the most important things you’ve slept through. #AI #teaching #communication

For decades, we’ve encouraged STEM. As AI becomes ubiquitous, soft skills are more important than ever. Those with well developed EQs will have the advantage. Humanities will once again save us from ourselves. #EnglishTeacher #writing #teaching #AI

It’s the part of the semester when students realize that blowing off two weeks of class in October has consequences in December. Remember kids, when you ask a professor for extra credit, what you’re asking is for them to do more work because you didn’t do your work the first time. #teaching

If you’re looking for a gift for the person who has everything, consider a donation to your local library You can donate a book they love, a banned book removed from your local school, or let the #librarian decide. It’s a gift that keeps giving & there’s a fancy sticker!

Librarians might be the best people on earth. Their sole job is to help others. The scope of help is unlimited: research, reading, computer skills, job hunt, citizenship apps, passports, community events, crafts, basic childcare, even administering Narcan, they quite literally do it all. Heroes. 📚

Writing is the best way to shape meaning. Full stop. Talking doesn’t provide context.
Writing about Northern Ireland this morning, I am thinking about something the novelist Glen Patterson told me when I was in Belfast in October:

"Politics monopolizes language. Literature can try and claim it back.”
