The latest prison fire safety report is out - but it raises as many questions as it answers. "It may not seem the highest priority just now, but issues like fire safety never are until they are".

Latest update: MoJ Permanent Secretary tells Public Accounts Committee they hope to reopen the site in March 2026. Also says spec for faulty doors was the same as has been used in other secure units. Which begs the question- are they a risk to the safety of residents and staff in those places too?

HMP Stafford housing many older prisoners has longstanding legionella issue, with shower blocks often closed.
Local watchdog says there's insufficient funding to provide a permanent fix.
HSE should pay a visit imo

As ever, I learned a lot during this podcast - not only about the serious failings in our current approach to women in conflict with the law but how to go about creating a more just and effective system. Do have a listen to two very well informed contributors sharing their thoughts and experience.

Well worth a listen. Women’s prisons are genuinely appalling and getting worse. They receive very little press coverage despite being more violent than men’s prisons and having a self-harm rate equivalent to around 6 incidents per prisoner per year

One in four prison cells dont meet fire safety standards and 6,000 still wont by end of 2027.
The red line about not using non compliant cells after that deadline no longer looks so red.
