Very sad to hear this news. 40 yrs ago as a MP DET was generous in assisting me with my Ruskin College dissertation. Later we campaigned together for devolution & as MS and Llywydd he was invariably supportive of adult education. A significant figure.

A fine obituary by Ivan Ruff of Jeremy Seabrook in today’s @theGuardian: ‘English to his bones, but international in his perceptions’. Seabrook way ahead of his time in charting the implications of economic & social decline & fragmentation in working-class communities.

First post here - seeing how it goes. Fascinating juxtaposition of comment by @torstenbell & @kenanmalik on HE in today’s @observeruk. TB points to negative effects of geographical distance from unis; KM refers to cultural distance as imp issue. Decline of adult ed a factor in all this to my mind.
