Senator John Heinz was a sincere public servant of high character and great courage, a moderate Republican of a type that has sadly ceased to exist.
I had the pleasure of working with Senator Heinz and his close friend, Senator Tim Wirth, a Democrat from Colorado, in a collaboration and bipartisan partnership that is absolutely inconceivable today.
True story: My late boss, John Heinz (yes, the food company Heinz) opposed Reagan on this and said it was outrageous to call ketchup a vegetable, adding "I need not add that I know something about ketchup"
