It's such a disappointment when you impulse buy a bag of dehydrated mango, get it home, pop it in your mouth and you can immediately tell they added a bunch of sugar to it. It's a mango! It was already a nice little sugary treat!

It's wild how any time a woman on the internet says a single positive thing about an ex the replies fill with a chorus of men saying "wElL wHy DiD yOu DuMp HiM tHeN??" Are these dudes just terrified of living in a world where having one solitary positive trait doesn't guarantee them a relationship?

One of the most tragic missteps in computing was the day Microsoft picked a directory separator for their operating system and caused an entire generation of people to call any slash used in a computer system a "backslash"

I think a pretty cool science flex would be to win a Nobel for a paper on retrocausality before publishing it

If your take on right wing success in mass media doesn't account for the immense disparity in funding, it is fundamentally unserious. The left cannot "do what the right does," because there is no left wing Koch or Murdoch or whatever robber baron put their name on your college's econ department

If someone says "I work in [field]" as a way to claim authority, you can pretty much bet money that they do some kind ancillary job in that field. If the specific work they did was impressive, they would say that instead of keeping it vague and letting you assume they're a researcher or whatever

I really hate that everyone's getting caught up in discourse about whether specific people we're sending to the torture prison are gang members or not. It doesn't matter, the government should not be able to send anyone to the torture prison for any reason. The torture prison should not exist!

It's wild how many people genuinely seem to think that the stock tickers going down is the only effect of these tariffs and you'll be fine if you just "buy the dip." They don't seem to realize the stock prices are plummeting *because of* the price increases and job losses we're about to start seeing

When a prosecutor gets interviewed on a true crime documentary are they like this is it, I finally made it?

This "Gulf of America" thing is somehow even more cringe than "freedom fries," because these numbskulls keep coming up with every possible contrived reason to say "Gulf of America" in contexts where they never, ever would have said the full name of the gulf (or even mentioned the damn thing) before

The explosion of computing technology in the 20th century was great and all but it does seem to have had the very unfortunate consequence of leading some people to believe that whatever technology they personally like can surely be scaled up by orders of magnitude at dramatically cheaper prices

Traffic engineering is basically wizardry. You draw very specific types of lines on the ground to direct the flow of immense amounts of energy, accomplishing great works and occasionally getting people killed

Something I've noticed is that before the Wachowski sisters were out the media always referred to them as "the Wachowski brothers," then switched to "the Wachowskis", but I've never seen a headline that says "the Wachowski sisters" even though they're both trans. Just seems subtly disrespectful

Running for president on a one issue platform of passing a constitutional amendment barring anyone from Florida from participating in the federal government. It would immediately end my presidency, but it would be worth it

The weird thing about having been chronically online in the early 2010s is having watched things like gamergate and the antivax movement rising, but normal people basically dismissing the idea that a bunch of online weirdos could be a real life problem. Now the online weirdos are running everything

It is funny how people will see someone tripling their money in a year and think "this person is a savy and wise investor" rather than "this person is clearly taking wild gambles on highly leveraged trades and will probably have zero dollars next year."

One of my favorite weird cultural things in America is how many people will talk in hushed tones about "banned" weapons that are "too dangerous," like switch blade knives or brass knuckles.

Meanwhile you can just go to a store and buy a gun.

Y'all, JD Vance isn't publicly defending white supremacy because he's "neutered" or "cucked" or "spineless." He's doing it because he wants to, just like the rest of them.

"But he's married to an Indian woman!"

Yeah, so what? You've never heard a racist talk about "one of the good ones?"

People never talk about the most unrealistic aspect of SpongeBob, which is that Sandy is a scientist from Texas with seemingly no interest in resource extraction

Have we considered the possibility that the trickshots industry did COVID, to get more people stuck at home doing trickshots?

One thing about the next couple years is you're about to find out exactly who in your life genuinely supports LGBT folks and who was just going along with the crowd

It feels like we're reverting to the Bush years in so many ways. One of them is this infuriating idea in the mainstream that "the left" has "abandoned" or "demonized" white men so they're moving to the right. Of course this is made up, but so many people will just repeat it matter of factly now

Every now and then I think about the girl in my third grade class who successfully passed off a Shel Silverstein poem as her own. We were all so impressed, and it wasn't until some years later that I saw it in a book and said wait wtf

Probably the lowest form of internet discourse is potshotting the form of someone's argument without even attempting to engage with the substance. Why should I care what you think of someone else's opinion if you couldn't be bothered to form one of your own?

One thing about being vegan is that occasionally someone will try to convince me that plants are sentient by combining a woefully inadequate definition of sentience with poorly interpreted experiments. Discussions about about AI are starting to feel similar in tone, if not all the specifics
