My new book Welcome Back to the World: A Novella and Stories is forthcoming from Cornerstone Press on 1 November 2024.

These stories came to life during Trump time, a pandemic, and all that followed. The stories reflect some of that darkness, but ultimately, I trust, offer a bit of hope.

“After a poetry reading, never submit to a Question-and-Answer session. Poetry gets the listeners high. A Q-and-A brings it all down to prose. Do they ask a folk singer to explain his songs? If a poem has to be explicated, it’s a failure in communication.”

Thank goodness for indie & small press publishers. They are keeping the literary arts alive (and diverse) in this age of conglomerates and streamlining. Here’s a pretty good list and some excellent presses to support and to watch.

“When I start writing I never feel sure that I will be able to write a new work. I never plan anything in advance, I just sit down and start writing. And at a certain point, I have the feeling that the work is already written and I just have to write it down before it disappears.”

Jimmy Buffett went to get his cheeseburger in Paradise. I wasn’t his biggest fan, but I’ll always remember him rocking the Bridge School Benefit like a pro. He had EVERYONE on their feet.

“I wish authors would write less about the innate nobility of the indomitable human spirit and more about failure without redemption, or the murky zone in between failure and getting by, where many of us live in real life.” —Patrick DeWitt

Missing Tony Hoagland. His poetry was brilliant but just now it’s his essays that thrill me. What a keen eye and a sharp mind.
