Thinking of Vance excusing the Young R. texts because they were "young boys.” I'm wondering if he supports the same treatment that 47 wanted for the Central Park 5 who were actually young boys.

In honor of the Portland protesters, can we start referring to ICE as antifrog?

This morning, I had my annual disappointment of not seeing my name on the list for the MacArthur fellowships.
So instead, I went and got vaccinated. Later, I'll vote.

At the beginning of each October, particularly on 10/4, I think about stories of the last known speaker of a language and I think that I may eventually become the last person who speaks 10-Code fluently.

Imagine that you are mugged. Your wallet, etc. are taken and you're left lying on the street unconscious. You're taken by ambulance to a hospital emergency department
Now, imagine a world where they confirm your citizenship before they examine you.
(And, BTW, EMTALA isn't paid for by Medicaid).

Has anyone thought of asking the ghostwriter who actually wrote The Art of the Deal to try negotiating a settlement?

What am I missing here? If Tennessee and Louisiana's governors think they need the national guard, why don't they just call it up themselves? Why ask the president except for the theatrical impact? Does this mean that the feds (i.e., the rest of the country) will pay for it instead of the state?

I haven't seen "The Lost Bus" or read the books about the Camp Fire. I don't plan to.
If anyone thinks that emotional healing post-disaster doesn't take longer than physical recovery, this advice for people here in Butte County who see the movie and connections to support services is telling.

I can't find any research on this. Does Tylenol cause bone spurs or if 47 had taken Tylenol, might it have cured his bone spurs in time for him to reach his goal of going into the military?

Seeing all of the posts by people cancelling their Disney subscriptions, I'm feeling left out. Would it be counterproductive to sign-up just so I can dump them?
As long as C-Span is okay, I'm good.

In my elementary school, daily prayers were normal. It had no connection to anything we did at home so I was confused. I thought I was the only one in class who didn't understand it which made me feel isolated. /1

Disney is unlikely to say anything publicly, but I wonder what they're thinking about how many parents of young children won't travel to a theme park located in a state without vaccine mandates.
Good opportunity for competitors in other states to incorporate epidemiology into their advertising?

My current competition for the news story I can the least about still has New York's mayoral election in the lead but the Cracker Barrell logo controversy is gaining rapidly on it.

Today's Sacramento Bee said a women was arrested after "she attacked her 10-year-old son with a machete while they were in the shower."
Beyond the general weirdness, I'm left wondering if "they" is the victim's preferred pronoun or if mother and son were in the shower together. Precision helps.

According to the White House, the papers found in a public printer were just a lunch menu and there was no security issue. Given that, I'm sort disappointed that NPR blacked out the phone numbers that were included. I mean, if it's no big deal . . .

So I’ve had tons of ideas about creating an ongoing protest movement around the Sandwich guy.
Should we call him the hoagie guy? The sandwich handler. The unarmed man who ran. The tosser of the ham?
Hoagie stickers. Hoagie signs kind of like the number one fingers that you see at sports games.

Even before listening to "The Retrievals" I was knew about h/c personnel stealing opioids and replacing it with saline. I can understand people stealing supplies for which there might be a market.
But, can someone explain why someone would steal skin grafts?

My last meeting in DC (2002) was scary. I could see the cranes at the Pentagon. Then (real scary), I went to have dinner with an ex-girlfriend. I took the Metro and had no idea how to use the payment system or figure out what train. A stranger saw my confusion and showed me. Terrifying!

If 47's reason for military occupation of DC sounds familiar, it might be:
"Hitler made a virulent speech attacking the Czechoslovak government's treatment of Germans within its borders."
See? Both of them were just defending the people there. What could be wrong with that?

I discuss how to spot good and bad sources with my students. I put up the University's Wikipedia page and "edit" it so we can see how long it takes to get my "false facts" corrected.
I've always said that as a rule, you can trust government statistics.
Now what do I tell them?
