A group of us went to our Senators' regional offices this morning, met with the Regional Directors. They were engaged and know the importance of research (in general terms). However, they did not seem to know about what is going on currently (re: F&A). If you can make a similar trip - please do.

Modern-Day Oracles or Bullshit Machines?

Jevin West (@jevinwest.bsky.social) and I have spent the last eight months developing the course on large language models (LLMs) that we think every college freshman needs to take.

I see a lot of potential using this in a mitonuclear context. Very nice work!
Our paper is finally out this week in PRL. We show that AlphaFold can predict the effect of mutations on structure.

From interactions at conferences, it's clear that a lot of people were initially skeptical. I think I convinced most people I talked to. What do people here think?

Our review paper on the stunning variation in sex roles and mating systems in shorebirds is published in Ibis and freely available to all.

Shorebirds have provided so much insight into this topic, but their potential is still untapped and there is much left to learn!

The causes and implications of sex role diversity in shorebird breeding systems
Males and females often exhibit different behaviours during mate acquisition, pair-bonding and parenting, and a convenient label to characterize these behaviours is sex role. The diverse roles that m....

Note to self that if you give 54 students in your evolution class prompts to have ChatGPT create Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium problems to answer and have a conversation about, YOU will have to do 100s of HWE problems 🥲 #AcademicSky #evobio

We have a new paper out on the taxonomic distribution of an understudied aspect of mitochondrial physiology, the alternative oxidase AOX.

The roles mitos play depend ultimately on managing electron flow through the electron transport system to reduce O2 to H2O.
