Preprints in Motion is looking for funding/sponsorship!

We're at that point in the year where we need to secure running costs for 2026.

We've captured 50+ hours of ECRs discussing their cool new preprints!

A new PI's guide to promoting open science and preprints in your lab
With over 7 years experience in advocating for preprint adoption and becoming leading experts in preprints and academic culture, we've compiled this 15 page guide for life science labs. This guide provides information and advice on how to embed preprints and open science principles into the cultural fabric of your lab group. Although aimed at new labs, this is highly applicable to more established groups too.  Follow Rippling Ideas (ripplingideas.org) to learn more and find more resources

We're actively seeking financial support.

We've achieved an enormous amount since we formed only 3 months ago but this has all been without funding. We're on track to become THE advocacy org in these spaces in 2026.

Peer review has only been commonplace since the 1970's in the life sciences. It's still a recent experiment and there are already many misconceptions and misunderstandings around what peer review achieves.

Take a look at our peer review reality check: zenodo.org/records/1...

The malignant impact of Robert Maxwell on scientific publishing
Robert Maxwell is largely responsible for the current business model in academic publishing. This model has corrupted science and resulted in a toxic academic culture that prioritises where work is published as opposed to the contents of the work.

When you post a preprint matters!

We strongly recommend around 1 month prior to journal submission in order to maximise the benefits of preprinting. And that's not just our opinion, that's based on evidence (here's what the immunology category looks like).

Guide to running a preprint review club
This guide walks you through everything you need to start, run, and grow a preprint review club — whether you’re converting an existing journal club or building one from scratch. It covers choosing preprints, organising meetings, training early-career researchers, writing structured reviews, and sharing them on platforms like PREreview or Hypothes.is. Designed for labs, departments, and research communities, the guide shows how preprint review clubs can boost critical-reading skills, strengthen collaborative science, and make peer review more open, constructive, and fun. Complete with templates, workflows, discussion prompts, and sample emails, this resource is your step-by-step companion for transforming traditional journal clubs into modern, impactful spaces for scholarly dialogue.

The evaluation of preprints is still relatively low; around 2% of preprints are evaluated in a journal-independent manner.

But thanks to great efforts from @prereview.bsky.social and others this is slowly changing.

Preprint friendly policies are growing!

This year the Gates Foundation implemented their new policy, HHMI debuted their new policy and The Navigation Fund also has a preprint policy that will take effect in 2026.

This are an important aspect to increasing preprint adoption!

Let's break this down a little.

We've heard things from researchers that really go against some of the things in this post and highlight a growing divide between the average researcher and the reform space.
Very much enjoyed last week's meeting in Cambridge about the Publish-Review-Curate (PRC) model for scholarly publishing. There were lots of highly inspiring discussions, including an important discussion about strengthening coordination between initiatives in this area.
