As I'm getting lots of new followers, no doubt from being in starter packs, I thought I'd say hello 👋

I'm John, I'm district, town and parish councillor for a half of a market town and a verdant swathe of countryside and national park in Hampshire in southern England. 🧵
I don't think it works like that, cousins.

I really feel for the traditional ecology-minded Green party members. As a long-term Labour member who first joined the party in 1991 this looks like a slow-motion car crash...

Suella Braverman is married to a Jewish man and thus enriches and expands her personal experiences of antisemitism with an understanding of how her husband feels on this subject.

She's just defected to Farage's party.

Make it make sense.

As the Burnham fall-out continues, I find it amazing how many politicos seems to have real difficulty separating “this is a terrible strategic decision” and “this is not the outcome I personally wanted”.

Both options spelled trouble for Starmer. You don’t have to like the decision to see the logic

Nobody is more angry about Burnham not being allowed to stand than our political ‘journalists’. They have been deprived of months if not years of drama and yet more grist for the mill of their tedious little podcasts.

NEC votes to continue applying the Labour Party rule book shocker.
January 25, 2026 at 1:46 PM
Interesting that some shout "factionalism" because the NEC has not been prepared to stay the rules for the heir apparent to their faction?
January 25, 2026 at 1:45 PM
Wonder if the media and some in the Labour Party would have got so excited about a Labour Party NEC decision if it had been Tracy Brabin requesting to stand in Denton and Gorton?
January 25, 2026 at 1:34 PM
Worth remembering that, as combined authority mayor, Andy Burnham was barred by Labour Party rules from standing as a candidate in Gorton and Denton.

That's why he wrote to the NEC and why this was considered by the full Officers' group (of 10) of the NEC and not a three-member selection panel.
January 25, 2026 at 1:01 PM
The 10-member NEC panel that is setting up the Gorton and Denton by-election has reportedly voted 8-1 to not allow Andy Burnham's candidacy.

That split makes it likely that Lucy Powell voted against Burnham.

All the speculation I've seen about Andy Burnham misses an important question: how would the life of the median citizen (or a member of the least advantaged class if you're a Rawlsian) be different if he were PM? Without this question, all we have is politics as soap opera.

There's been an awful lot of tumbleweed from the daft left about the atrocities in Iran over the past few weeks.

It makes a fascinating counterpoint to any action involving the world's only Jewish state.

There's still a glint of light at 4.45pm here in Ringwood.

It might just be by a smidge at the moment, but the days are getting longer.
