So, I’m leaning into an American Civil War-era design, one that uses powerful imagery like the bald eagle breaking chains—a clear message of liberty and unity. This motif speaks to our ongoing struggle for justice and democracy, drawing on a time when the U.S. fought for freedom and abolition.

I’m drawn to the ideals of the Iron Front, a Weimar-era coalition of social democrats, trade unionists, and democratic socialists who stood up to totalitarian ideologies on both extremes. Yet, their flag, while powerful, carries visual elements that might feel authoritarian today.

The Lincoln Brigade, made famous during the Spanish Civil War, is inspiring, but its close ties to communism make it too polarizing.

In response to the current moment, I’ve decided to fly a flag that represents America’s historic commitment to democracy, freedom, and the fight against authoritarianism. I’ve been looking for an anti-fascist symbol rooted in American history—something that hasn’t been co-opted or misrepresented.
