At 12 redesigns, I have reached the minimum number that I said I'd do.
I'll probably continue later. I hate the idea of disappointing anyone. And the more I do, the more disappointed the few I didn't choose will be. But I need a break from this project.

Kha'Rie's got a fairly sleek, elegant design. Her eyeball-covered tentacle-hair and coloration are her main deviations from the human form. She's a goddess who's a little subtle in her eldritch qualities. But you can't show me a nautical-themed eldritch lady and expect me not to go ham. Our first and most obvious change is that I swapped her legs for a trio of mermaid tails, ala Melusine, or the Starbucks mermaid. It's a surprisingly common trope in a lot of folkloric designs. Plus slithering about on multiple tails was one of Typhon's big signature traits, and Kha'rie strikes me as the type who'd put Zeus in his place. I also nixed the primary eyes and made it to where her hair-eyes are what she sees out of. I love weird eyes in my monstergirls. We also went and gave her teeth in some of her clothing folds, reminding us that that's not really fabric so much as a part of her manifestation. I wound up dropping the beads because, again, Kha'rie is a very elegant design whose charm is in her simplicity. Given how much more complex I made her, something had to compensate. This one gave me trouble simply from trying to find a visually striking way to remix her clothing elements. I wanted the workshirt over turtleneck minidress" thing, but balancing it just right was surprisingly difficult. Erin is a snoop, on top of being a reporter, so I tried to make her look simultaneously spunky and elegant. She can get physical if need be, and her hands(And fingerprints) are protected by gloves. Her skirt is narrow, but is designed to be able to flare out and give her legs more room to move if she needs to run. And her mic is attached to a portable battery, to keep it discreet and functional. She's simple, but there are details hinting that she's more scrappy than she looks. This is in the "firmly Fronterra-themed redesign" category, rather than the ambiguity of the others. Lemurians are an established thing, so an anthropomorphic lemur-lady was an easy in. A mad scientist is equally at home, so Ember wound up in the same boat as Ruki and Amaro, in that it's mainly subtle remixes that set this one apart. The most noticeable change, I think, is probably her feets. Lemurians often go barefoot, to make use of their prehensile feet, and Ember seems like she'd benefit from that. I also made her turtleneck into something of a leotard, though it's not as visible as I'd like. The belly window just felt like a nice cherry on top. We gave her a belt around her midriff, with many pouches, rather than trusting her labcoat's stability to one or two buttons. She's got a bit of physicality to her, ready to run and duck and climb, and take a few hits if she needs to. She's a MAD scientist, after all! I played with the idea of giving her a prosthetic limb, to make her feel appropriately grungy, but nothing was really vibing with me. But I'm sure her appearance is somewhat dynamic, given how much action she sees. You get a lot of freedom when your reference image is a kiskae pic. This one's a reasonably simple concept: Chubby, bratty, predacious femboy prince. I experimented with longer sleeves, and with the overcoat being longer, but I found I preferred the ill-fitting look. He's spilling out of too-small clothes, having let himself go, and he cares not one bit. Formally dressed though he is, the design isn't restrictive at all. He can run, jump, tackle and chase you if he has to, but he'd REALLY rather not bother. The crown was supernaturally significant, so I opted for a design that's a little more secure on his head. And a little more tiara-esque. I like tiaras, and one adds that femmy touch to a mostly masc-leaning outfit.

Strohman and I exchange ideas for character design all the time, so this one flowed pretty naturally. I took the "augmented human" thing and pushed it, replacing the limbs almost entirely, and making the neck portion clearly far beyond anything human. Strohman's designs often normalize nudity, and the original had her tits and pussy right out, for all to see. But my eye wanted to do the "technically SFW, if only by the grace of a few wayward strips" thing. Strohman has a thing for Felicia Darkstalkers, and it just felt right. The crotchplate kind of flows into the tail, giving her a more dinosaurian shape. This one is likely the most radical of the set, but I think I was only able to do that because the original vibes with me so hard. This one wasn't hard to figure out. Jimmy's a citrine rock creature with two primary colors. That in mind, I focused on textures and sheer shapes to convey his composition. The nonhuman facial features wound up making him look like a Swat Kats character, but I kinda dig it. Admittedly, I simplified the shoes a little, so as to focus more on the elaborate patterning. Really, I feel like I may have aimed for a simpler outfit altogether, to focus on his anatomy. The original had a pair of citrine tusks that were only visible when his lips were pulled back. That didn't really apply when I made him more snaggletoothed, but it made his smile more prominent, so I vibe with it. Shel is in a similar position to Callie, in that the base design is extremely simple, but this one lacks the overt supernatural elements to lean into. Frankly, I relished the challenge that brought. Accessories make or break a design, so I tried to focus on the little things to set her apart; Earrings, wristwatch, the logo on her shirt. I spent the day watching 50's B-movies, so I was bombarded with a lot of outdated slang. This, conveniently, reminded me that "Dick" was a slang term for detective, prompting me to make the text on her shirt a little cheekier. I actually had multiple versions of this one, where she has hair highlights, and versions with and without glasses. Ultimately I decided that, while it's a redesign, having both was too much of a departure to be recognizable, so I had to choose. And I'm always going to side with glasses on that. I experimented a LOT with this one before I settled on a direction. This little garg was absolutely adorable, and I couldn't bring myself to alter its face substantially, no matter HOW much fun it would be to go ham with exposed teeth. I wound up using that conviction to figure out where I was going. With so many of my sketches kind of looking like a softer take on Nosferatu Zodd, I decided a more bestial body would pair nicely with the mostly humanoid head. Initially, that wound up making it look like some kind of funky sphinx, but my hand wandered into kaiju territory, with the pear-shaped bipedalism and the heavy tail. I think it wound up working. The character is certainly a gargoyle, but less "Goliath" and more "Destoroyah." It remains chubby, because it was an unforgivably huggable design right from the start.

I've been meaning to do another pass at Fronterra AU designs for Ruki and Amaro, so once I had them down, there was no reason not to include them in the set. My first pass was Ruki's base design, with horns. On top of being lazy, it also made her harder to swallow head-first. Unacceptable! This incarnation still doesn't deviate TOO far, but mashes numerous alternate outfits into one. She's very much a shrine maiden, but there's some chinese noblewoman, some saloon girl and even a little college student in there. She's got a lot of depth, after all. Amaro was both easier and harder. In the end, I based his outfit off of Ruki's, complete with Absolute Territory, and hardened it up in places. His first pass was a lot greener, but K insisted on a blue-and-black to contrast Ruki's white and blue. The result was rewarding. Amaro is very much an archer, as it's his main thing. But I opted to give him a firearm on the side, just in case. It pays to be prepared, and Fronterra has a lot of Weird West vibes. Pulling double duty as a woodsy archer and a gunslinger works well for him, i feel. I also echoed Ruki's yin/yang symbole on both outfits. It's significant to her, and there were some spots that needed a little visual flair. I think I struggled with this one the most on the grounds that Callie is an extremely simple design to begin with. When you're so streamlined, it can be hard to figure out what to change without radically altering the vibes. Base Callie runs around in a bikini with mystical eye symbols. So whatever we do with the outfit, it has to be pretty skimpy. But it's right there in the name. She's a necromancer. So I decided to shoot for a more overt fantasy styling. Accessories, new patterns, a general crank-up of the goth. There is an alt with her usual style of glasses, but I really wanted to see how she looked with energy-glasses, ala Midnight Sparkle. I kinda like them. I struggled with this one a lot, not because I didn't have a pretty clear vision of Fronterra!Bridget, but because I wasn't really sure how much of a redesign it was going to be. Ultimately, I decided that accessories make the outfit, and details can go a long way. Her boots are a lot more cowboy-appropriate, and I ripped the knees of her pants to imply an active life. She has fingerless gloves to protect her primary sword-holding vessels, her top is ever so slightly different, and I made her secondary sword visibly strapped to her back. Capped it off with a nice hair ribbon, for class. Still not the most radical departure in this set, but I like where she landed. Deidre, from what I've been able to find, is one of those OCs where the public information is hiding a lot of unspoken lore. So I had to do my best with getting the vibes just right. The reference provided was for a spider/lamia type design, so presumably that's the form I'm redesigning. And that suits me just fine, because the challenge of combining a creature known for lacking limbs with a creature known for having an abundance of limbs was DELICIOUS. So, right away, I just had to play around with the limbs. We kept there being four primary arms, and then four secondary ones, but their functions have been swapped around. The topmost are primarily heavy weapons, while the lower two pairs are build for fine manipulation. The middle pair can pull double duty as either, with less specialization. And we added some pedipalps, for luck. The original design had sarashi, but my take wound up not really having much to cover up. But she'd look weird if glasses were ALL she was wearing, so I turned the sarashi into silk bandages. Maybe they're the remnants of some garment, having torn or transformed as she assumed this form. I like the vibe they give.

I think it speaks to Ryla's charisma and helpfulness that people keep asking her for help, knowing full well that there will always be a nonzero chance that the voice of a cosmic evil breaks through her defenses, takes control of her mind, and commands her to devour everyone around her.
An image of Ryla in her WANDER incarnation - a fact which I have to tell you outright, as she's completely unrecognizable, having unraveled into a mass of maws, eyes and tendrils. She has all four of the main WANDER cast in her various maws, in the process of devouring them all at once. Lelia's boots are also sticking out of one mouth, and her boyfriend may or may not be in there already.
