Did you know that there have been five Royal Navy ships that carried the name 'HMS Rifleman', with the first launched in 1804? If we take the raising of the 5th/60th in 1797 as the starting point for Riflemen in the British Army, the Navy was only seven years behind in using the name!

Today, we pause to remember the service and sacrifice of Riflemen across generations, and of all soldiers who gave their lives for the freedom and protection of others.

Lest we forget.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

This is one of the four hooves of ‘Coal Box’, a German pony befriended by bandsmen of the 2nd Battalion, The King’s Royal Rifle Corps (2KRRC), during WWI. After Coal Box’s death, the hoof was plated and kept as a memento, and later donated to the Museum.
