The Chicago Tribune: "Yeah, yeah, democracy and due process and Medicaid under attack, launching a global recession, giving comfort to dictators, unilateral gutting of all independent government oversight, demonization of judges, yada yada yada... BUT WHAT ABOUT THE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE F-BOMBS"

It’s amazing how so many powerful people don’t get it: You can give Donald Trump whatever he wants. He will still throw you under the bus eventually, every single time. The only option is for everyone to say “no” and not be thrown under the bus, or to say “yes” and be thrown under it one at a time.

Good morning! I've never done my "Why Oscars Matter" spiel on bsky! So here 'tis. I talk a lot to programmers and archivists about how hard it is to get corporate permission to screen rare films, let alone restore them. The FIRST question the suits will ask is "Did it win an Oscar?"

Every. Time.

I have a kid who’s mildly on the spectrum, and he’s never given a Nazi salute even “accidentally,” and if he somehow did so at my inauguration I’d agree he probably shouldn’t be a public-facing spokesperson for my political movement. But hey, I’m not a fascist. A fascist might think that was perf.

I have dear friends who’ve lost homes. Some of my favorite places in a city I’ve lived in for nearly 30 years vanished in the space of a few hours. I fear my apartment, not far from one of the major fires, may still go up in flames. I’ve got a little kid I have to shield from the horror of it. 1/2

A genuine question before this comes up again with this year's Oscars and everyone starts gnashing their teeth about how the movies are dead:

How much of this decline is because smart TVs make it hard to watch channels everyone used to flip on for free?

Look, I’m happy to have all jobs farmed out to robots, as long as all that efficiency is returned in the form of endless leisure & guaranteed food/water/health care/shelter for all people, instead of for 1000 billionaires who then sit back and watch us kill each other for grubs & a cave to hide in.

This is making the rounds again. It’s important we keep passing it around, I think:

VOTE. And while you’re at it, vote for the one who isn’t a fascist. That’d be the one NOT promising to turn the military on her fellow citizens. (If you disagree with her, that’s also why you want to vote for her, btw. If you disagree w/ the other guy, he’s more likely to turn the military on you)

It's important to understand that power-seeking political philosophies like fascism are inherently dishonest and will make whatever claims move them closer to acquiring power. Pointing out their hypocrisy is meaningless; you cannot be a hypocrite if you have no moral core.
