I wrote a leadership book for Christians at a time when leadership failures and scandals in business, politics and, tragically, in ministry have been alarming. If you are a Christian leader in the marketplace or in ministry, this is a book for you. Your leadership matters to God!

“Only in returning to me
and resting in me will you be saved.
In quietness and confidence is your strength. But you would have none of it. You said, ‘No, we will get our help from Egypt.” Isaiah 30

The Church and politics? “For without consulting me, you have gone down to Egypt for help.
You have put your trust in Pharaoh’s protection…But by trusting Pharaoh, you will be humiliated,
and by depending on him, you will be disgraced. He will not help you.
Instead, he will disgrace you.” Isaiah 30

When the church seeks to change the world through political power, it does not change the world, it becomes the world.
As Stanley Hauerwas famously says, “The first task of the church is to make the world the world.”

We’re not called to battle for Christ like soldiers-we’re called to be ambassadors of His great love to a watching world with a special concern for the most vulnerable. Compassion, not judgment. Kindness, not anger. Humility, not arrogance.

As Christians, we can be so consumed with the sins of those we disagree with that we fail to see our own sins of judgment, anger and choice not to love our perceived enemies. This is why Jesus warned us about removing the ‘log’ from our own eye before seeing the speck in theirs.

It’s estimated that 8 out of 10 immigrants at risk of deportation in this country are Christians. So why are so many Evangelicals cheering as ICE agents brutally round them up, pull them away from jobs and family, throw them in unmarked vans and send them off to be deported? Jesus wept.

Here is a thought that should give us perspective: God replaces the entire human race every 100 years or so. The question is what our current generation will do with our 100 years to honor our creator and make our world a better place.

The problem of migration is political but also ethical. How should we think about or treat these migrants? When I someday stand before God, I would rather be found guilty of caring too much than judging too much. “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.”

Many things can become idols in our lives, money, success, beauty, etc.One of those idols can be politics. What happens when our politics become an idol? This, from Tim Keller: “In the end idols can make it possible to call evil good and good evil.” This is happening right now in the Church.

Christians are to be the fragrance of Christ in our culture. Our fragrance can be one of judgment or love, compassion or cruelty, grace or anger, humility or self-righteousness, peace or conflict. What fragrance have you chosen?

How should Christians respond to migrants? Well, the Church’s job is to care for desperate and hurting people. The government’s role is to set border policy. Jesus doesn’t check IDs before deciding to care. Let’s let the Church be the Church and the government be the government.

True arrogance is to stand on Earth pondering its wondrous plant and animal life-with its beauty and majesty-with a brain that provides remarkable cognitive abilities-in a massive solar system within one of billions of galaxies in an infinite universe-and declare confidently that there is no God.

To be a disciple means forsaking everything to follow Jesus, unconditionally, putting our lives completely in His hands. When we say that we want to be His disciple, yet attach a list of conditions, Jesus refuses to accept our terms. His terms involve unconditional surrender.

The beautiful simplicity of our faith is that it distills down to the exact same bottom line for both the brilliant theologian and the five-year-old child: love God and love each other - period.
