In these dystopian times I find I am drawn to consume more stories, whether in book, film, tv or other formats. Escape reality. Posting what I’ve read or watched this year.
📚 Books: 32
🎬 Films: 34
📺 TV Series: 30
TV Series 30 of 2025: Alien Earth. Enjoyed this a lot, good characters (especially Morrow), the classic Alien suspense vibe plus some new elements, not to mention the new Aliens. A little disappointing that it seemed to finish mid story, but then I guess a second series is a given #tvsky 📺

Book 32 of 2025: Greta and the Ghost Hunters by Sam Copeland. Picked this up in the library as we liked the Tuchus & Topps books. Enjoyed this, it covers some big themes such as aging, fear, death, massive farts and poo and stick based games. Some very funny bits, but also touching. #booksky 📚

TV Series 29 of 2025: The Witcher Series 2. A good continuation of the story, some interesting character development for both Ciri and Yennefer. Ends with a bang and some big monsters and a teaser of things to come. Enjoyed it. #tvsky #TheWitcher 📺

Book 31 of 2025: Dead Lions by Mick Herron. I’ve not been commuting for the last month so this has taken me ages. Continues the story of Jackson Lamb and his Slow Horses. Not bad but a bit slow, picks up towards the end. Hate a tie-in cover, thankfully the only one in the set #booksky #slowhorses 📚

TV Series 28 of 2025: The Witcher series 1. Didn’t know much about this but figured it would be Swords and Sorcery, and wasn’t disappointed. Henry Cavill does a good job of the gruff voiced lead role of Geralt. The other cast aren’t too bad either. Not enough big monsters for me #tvsky 📺

Books 29 and 30 of 2025: Diary of a Wimpy Kid 1 and 2. Got these from the Library, lots of silly humour, perhaps a little old for the 7 year old but he seemed to enjoy them. Personally I didn’t like the way Greg treats his friends and misbehaves, might try to avoid the others. #booksky #library 📚

TV Series 27 of 2025: The Capture series 1. Didn’t really know what to expect from this, but it had us interested from the start. A scary vision of what may be possible in the future. Holiday Grainger and the rest of the cast play it well and it keeps you guessing for a long time. #tvsky 📺

Film 34 of 2025: Kung Fu Panda 2. More of the same but this time the villain is a peacock played by Gary Oldman. My boy enjoyed the silly humour and the fight scenes. #filmsky #moviesky 🎬

Book 28 of 2025: Little Badman: The Game of Nightmares. The boy picked this up at the Library based on the cover alone. We actually enjoyed this quite a bit, it was longer than our usual books but quite well paced for a kids book. Loved the references to the different video games #booksky #library 📚

Film 33 of 2025: Sisu. A brutal action film pitting one ex Finnish special forces old guy against a company of Nazis. Some of the things he goes through are ridiculous but it’s certainly entertaining. Despite the lead not saying anything for most of the film you do feel for him #filmsky #moviesky 🎬

Film 32 of 2025: The Thursday Murder Club. I have enjoyed the books in the series. The casting is good (Brosnan aside) but I think the characters don’t translate so well to screen. A lot is in the way Osman writes and the general vibe hasn’t come across in the film so well #filmsky #moviesky 🎬

Film 31 of 2025: Thunderbolts. I enjoyed this MCU gathering up of the leftover characters from various films and series. It’s essentially a Yelena film, and Florence Pugh does a good job of carrying it. I wonder where Spiderman and Daredevil were in the finale in New York? #filmsky #moviesky 🎬

Film 30 of 2025: Kung Fu Panda. I’ve seen this before but first time for the 7 yr old. We enjoyed it, especially the end fight where Po uses his belly and bottom to fight the baddie. We have the other films recorded so will give them a go soon. #filmsky #moviesky 🎬

TV Series 26 of 2025: Whitstable Pearl series 3. A cosy mystery series, largely carried by Kerry Godliman. Nothing amazing but passes the time. #tvsky 📺
September 4, 2025 at 9:08 PM
Film 29 of 2025: World War Z. An ok Zombie film, takes no time to get to the action, with Zombies abound in the first 10 minutes. Feels almost like a video game style plot that sees Brad Pitt escaping Philly, heading to South Korea, then Israel and ending up in Wales (!). #filmsky #moviesky 🎬

TV Series 25 of 2025: Black Doves. We enjoyed this London based spy drama. It got a bit confusing towards the end but the performances by Keira Knightley and especially Ben Whishaw were great. His triggerman Sam steals the show. Seems there will be a series 2 #tvsky #blackdoves

TV Series 24 of 2025: Altered Carbon series 2. The first season had some differences to the book but this has taken some ideas from books 2 and 3 and made something else. It’s not terrible and I think Anthony Mackie does ok. Best character is the AI Poe in my opinion. #tvsky 📚

Book 27 of 2025: The Secret of Zygarde & A Legendary Truth. Another Pokémon book we picked up from the Library, this time with 2 stories. This was a bit advanced for us as it seemed like a lot of characters and Pokémon we didn’t know. The boy seemed to like it though. #booksky 📚 #pokemon
August 23, 2025 at 7:10 PM
TV Series 23 of 2025: Untamed. A decent mystery set in the beautiful Yosemite National Park. Eric Bana and Sam Neill do ok but it’s Lily Santiago as likeable city cop turned Ranger Vasquez who steals the show. Her and the scenery. #tvsky 📺
August 16, 2025 at 5:04 PM
Film 28 of 2025: Star Wars: A New Hope. This is not new for me, but the first time for the 7 year old. Was hard to decide if he was ready, given some distressing scenes but we went for it. Had to skip some of the trash compactor scene. He liked the space battles and lightsabers #filmsky #moviesky
August 16, 2025 at 4:06 PM
Book 25 and 26 of 2025: Pokémon A New Beginning and A New Companion. The 7 year old is in to Pokémon lately so we got these from the library. Not particularly well written but he enjoyed them. Fairly gentle intro, given that we have since read a later one that was hard to follow #booksky
August 16, 2025 at 2:28 PM
Film 27 of 2025: Troll. A by numbers creature feature, but it’s done pretty well. The usual stereotypes; scientist no one believes, politicians determined to kill the creature, army guy etc. Slightly disappointing ending given the timing. Seems like Troll 2 is on the way. #filmsky #moviesky #troll
August 7, 2025 at 2:05 PM
Book 24 of 2025: Flat Stanley The African Safari Discovery. We’ve read a couple of these with the 7 year old before. They are quite sweet stories about Stanley and his family. This time he’s on the trail of a supposed flat skull found in Africa. #booksky 📚
