The Tilemap3D isn't worth using imho. It's simpler in the long run just to align nodes to a grid with the grid snap.
It suffers from the same lod and occlusion issues that MultimeshInstance3d suffers from too.

Why am I only just learning about Imphenzia's PixPal Palette, and how easy it is to use in Godot (thanks to @flynsarmy.bsky.social nice little import plugin: github.com/Flynsarmy/gd...).

If you port that code out of _physics_process into _input, it'll only fire when needed, not check if it's needed all the time.
