Allah tells us that He is “Forgiver of wrongdoing and Accepter of repentance, severe in punishment, infinite in bounty” (40:3). Not only does he accept our repentance but He reaches out to us: “Allah Almighty stretches out His hand by night to accept the repentance of those who do wrong by day.”

We should seek the things that are truly valuable and worth seeking: absolute servanthood (ubudiyyah) to Allah, direct knowledge of Him (ma’rifah) and purity of heart. It has been said: “The greatest karamah (miracle) is istiqamah (steadfastness).”

The disbeliever must make tawbah from their disbelief; the disobedient believer must take tawbah from their disobedience and the heedless one must take tawbah from their heedlessness. Beyond that there are more subtle levels of tawbah.

If Allah has blessed us with inward and outward obedience (and before we start to give ourselves credit, note that it is Allah who bestows this upon us) then we should be truly grateful.

It was great to be back in Dar al-Arqam to discuss yaqin or certainty, which is defined as power, firmness and stability of faith so great that it becomes as a towering mountain which no doubts can shake and no illusions rock.

Why must we make tawbah immediately? It all comes back to certainty. Wrongdoing is like poison - if we are certain that it is harmful we would leave it immediately. If we don’t, it as if we don’t believe how harmful it is.

Rather than demanding things from Allah, we should make demands of our own selves in the knowledge that, as the Imam mentions previously: “That which the knowers of Allah seek from Him is sincerity in servanthood and fulfilling the rights of His Lordship.”

Imam al-Ghazali begins his discussion on tawbah by describing it as the starting point for people travelling the path. This is why he makes it the first book in the final quarter of the Ihya which deals with the saving qualities (munjiyat).

May Allah allow us to witness people’s spiritual states and stop us from being veiled by their outward human form. May He allow us to constantly witness and realise our servanthood to Him.

We thank Allah for a beautiful afternoon in the company of Shaykh Musab and Shaykh Hasan. One thing mentioned was that in reality, it is Allah who is calling people to Him, and not us. So if we want people to come to Allah and to be part of that, we have to be with Allah.

The path is clear and the guides are there for those who seek them. Our problem is that whims, temptations and desires take us away from the path. The word used here is “hawa” which is the inclination to what is false and of no benefit.

We are about to enter the blessed month of Dhu’l-Hijjah. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ informed us that there are no days in which good deeds are more beloved to Allah than the first ten days of this month. Although we are not physically there, we can still take advantage of this time.
