My son and I both have books published next year. His is an academic work about free will - he's a philosophy professor - and mine a diary of a year as a priest. Very different and his much more profound. It's also my 19th and his first. So, so proud of him.

York. Here in Clifford's Tower in 1190 there was a pogrom. In 2024 I was in Lincoln, where in 1225 more innocent Jewish people were killed. Then there's London, Colchester, Norwich, etc. I don't single out my homeland. Other Christian nations did the same and worse ....

Just went to see The Importance of Being Earnest. Excellent! Stephen Fry is superb as Lady Bracknell. We had dinner afterwards but, alas, he wasn't in costume .....

Today in 1605 Guy Fawkes and friends tried to blow up Parliament. I was walking past the execution spot when a US couple asked if anything had happened here. "Yes", I said, "the Gunpowder gang were publicly disemboweled, castrated, hanged, and beheaded." The fife: "My lord, was this recently?"
