Coping with Serious Illness can sometimes appear unhealthy (denial, substance use, humor, etc..) How should we approach this? Should we re-think our good/bad stance?

I gave a palliative care talk to our UCSF IM interns this afternoon on “symptom management.” I asked what symptoms they want to cover. The first request was “existential distress and suffering.” I paused to collect my thoughts, which mainly was “damn, this new generation of physicians are good.”
