A week after immigrant groups filed a lawsuit, California said Tuesday it will delay the revocations of 17,000 commercial driver’s licenses until March to allow more time to ensure that truckers and bus drivers who legally qualify for the licenses can keep them.

Epstein, who was indicted in July 2019 on federal sex-trafficking charges, had been locked up in the now-closed Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York for five weeks when, on Aug. 10, at roughly 6:30 a.m., he was found dead in his cell. He had been denied bail and, at age 66, was facing a potential 45-year sentence if convicted on all charges. The day before his death, federal judges in a separate civil lawsuit had unsealed 2,000 pages of records containing allegations of his sexual abuse of girls and young women.

A newly released batch of the so-called Epstein files on Tuesday includes many references to Donald Trump, including a claim by a senior US attorney that the US president was on a flight in the 1990s with the now-deceased convicted child sex offender and a 20-year-old woman.

There is no indication of whether the woman was a victim of any crime, and being included in the files does not indicate any criminal wrongdoing. The latest tranche of files by the justice department follows a similar release last week of a section of the documents detailing its investigations into the billionaire sex offender. The files include more references to Trump, but also more details about Epstein’s relationship with economist Larry Summers, and a letter to convicted sexual abuser and gymnastics coach Larry Nassar. The numerous references to Trump include an email that suggests he travelled onboard Epstein’s private jet with women who would have been possible witnesses to the case against Epstein’s accomplice, Ghislaine Maxwell.

In message after message, they often turned to the same man for advice, for connections, and to banter and trade gossip about President Donald Trump. That man, Jeffrey Epstein, was already a registered sex offender after a 2008 conviction for soliciting prostitution with a minor – but that did not seem to deter his pen pals, some of whom even looked to him for guidance on avoiding their own sexual scandals. Those messages were laid bare in extraordinary fashion last week when the House Oversight Committee released more than 23,000 pages of records obtained from the estate of Epstein, who died in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. The messages have been heavily scrutinized for new revelations about Epstein’s relationship with Trump – and indeed, show that Epstein relished talking about their one-time friendship as Trump rose to political power, offering his opinions on everything from the president’s sanity – “f***ing crazy” – to who should be in his Cabinet. But the thousands of Epstein emails also show another key aspect of his uniquely corrupting role in American society: How he cast himself at the center of a web of power and influence.

A medical worker in the nearby city of Kandahar told BBC Pashto that four bodies had been brought to a local hospital. Four other people were wounded. Three were reportedly wounded in Pakistan. There has been sporadic fighting between the two countries in recent months, while Afghanistan's Taliban government has also accused Pakistan of carrying out air strikes inside the country. Both sides have confirmed they exchanged fire overnight but each blamed the other for initiating the four hours of fighting.
