At least six people have died after a super typhoon barrelled through the Philippines, mere days after an earlier storm left more than 200 people dead. Super Typhoon Fung-wong brought floods and landslides, which caused most of the deaths. It later weakened into a typhoon, but not before cutting power through several provinces. Fung-wong was the 21st typhoon to hit the Southeast Asian nation this year, at a time when many residents are still struggling to recover from back-to-back natural disasters.

Hurricane Melissa caused havoc in Jamaica as the Caribbean nation faced the strongest storm in its modern history, and is set to devastate Cuba. Melissa made landfall on Jamaica's coastline with winds of more than 185 miles per hour. A Meteorological Service of Jamaica official had warned conditions would get "significantly worse", and the US National Hurricane Center predicted "catastrophic winds, flash flooding and storm surges".
