“Octopus” refers to a single member of a particular subset of cephalopod species

“Octopi” refers to 8π which is related in some way to the circumference of a hypersphere or something
“Fish” can refer to a single individual, or multiple individuals from the same species.

“Fishes” refers to multiple species.
