Thanksgiving is the number one day of the year for home cooking fires in the U.S., and leaving food unattended is the leading cause. According to the National Fire Protection Association, cooking accounts for 80% of Thanksgiving Day home fires and 40% of related injuries.

Last night, our Disaster Action Team responded to a 4-alarm fire on 1st Ave in East Harlem, helping 20 people who were displaced w/ emergency assistance such as temporary lodging and financial assistance.

Big thanks to our volunteers who stepped up to help neighbors in need!

By the end of the response to the Clay Ave fire in Claremont, Bronx on November 3, the Red Cross helped 50 families (118 adults and 21 children) with emergency assistance.

In celebration of Veterans Day, our SAF volunteers handed out thank you cards to veterans as they walked up 5th Avenue at the nation's largest parade honoring those who have served our nation.

The #LIHeroes Celebration is over, but two of the honorees, Charlie Dubofsky of Brookville and Sydney Hassenbein of Roslyn, were highlighted by the Long Island Press for turning personal tragedy into a source of hope for others.
