Before Brexit, many hospitality jobs in Jersey were filled by Europeans. Today, a new wave of immigrants - mainly Kenyans and Filipinos - do the work, but tough visa conditions are making life on the island difficult.

Work permits are controlled by a migrant’s employer and holders can only stay on the island for nine months at a time.  To listen to Ada Barumé and Orlando Crowcroft’s Slow Newscast investigation int...

I'm back in the hot seat on today's episode of The News Meeting.

We talk about an intriguing all-caps post from Trump, ask whether we’re too old to 'get' AI chatbots and look at why some American lawyers are running for cover.

The fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has expired, and hopes for a second phase are fading fast.

With hostages still held in Gaza and political tensions rising in Israel, is renewed war now inevitable?

Why did Anora sweep the board at the Oscars last night?

@stephena1984.bsky.social says its honest portrayal of sex work might be the answer: "For much of Anora's first half, the women primarily talk about their shifts, the rota and their plans for retirement."

Is Anora the most radical film at this year’s Oscars?
This year’s Oscars are more political than ever, with Anora being the critics’ favorite for Best Picture. But could its portrayal of sex work signal a real shift in Hollywood’s attitude, or is it just...

@chloehadj.bsky.social first called me about this story back in early 2024. As she laid the details over the phone I was astounded: a 14-year-old boy had a 'relationship' with his 27-year-old female teacher but no one wanted to see him as a victim of sexual abuse.
Gareth spent years believing he was a lucky boy.

He was the 14-year-old who got the attention of the attractive young science teacher.

In our latest series series, @chloehadj.bsky.social asks who gets to be a perpetrator and a victim.

Great to be joined by @youngvulgarian.marieleconte.com for the latest episode of @tortoisemedia.bsky.social's The News Meeting.

We debated which story - Trump's lies, Badenoch's rightward shift and the alarming situation in DRC - should lead the news

Why do some young voters buy Trump's lies about Ukraine and what’s behind the violence in the DRC?

Since Donald Trump’s inauguration in January, the news cycle has been non-stop.

One question that our editors keep asking on The News Meeting podcast is: does this story really matter, or is it just another case of The White House throwing out distractions while journalists scramble to chase them?
