To the Future 2020 oil on canvas.

A self portrait by way of introduction. I painted this in spring/summer 2020 in lockdown. I was on my own and found the experience isolating but also somewhat liberating in part. This painting explores the anxiety and loneliness I felt.
I've just seen a man playing the piano with his nipples and I think that's enough Instagram for now.

The need to open my bathroom window to let the steam out v the fear of the pesky squirrel making a return visit to find somewhere to hide his nuts is very real.
Left my bathroom window open after a shower. Drying my hair only to find a squirrel roaming around my lounge like he lives there.

Started a new little painting of Battersea Power Station from pimlico. Need to play with it some more but enjoying the challenge of capturing the winter light.

'Vase of Flowers.' (1953) Dorothy Mead was taught by David Bomberg and became a founding member of the Borough Group, its output distinguished by angular, expressionist, dense brushwork. She enjoyed critical success showing alongside Hockney and Bridget Riley.

As we enter the New Year remember fear of making bad art is holding you back. Fear of people not liking your work is holding you back. Rejection is holding you back

You'll make bad art, you'll have people not like your work, and you'll be rejected. Moving past it is half the job of being a creative

In Felix Vallotton's 'Honfleur in Fog,' (1911) he has chosen an unusual viewpoint by looking down from Mont-Joli to the west of the town and restricted his palette to a few colours; the sandy yellow and dark green lift the mood of the otherwise gloomy atmosphere.

An alla prima self portrait selfie portrait. I wanted to see what I could paint quickly rather than my usual slower layers of paint. I'm very satisfied with the fabric and flowers. Quick and definite marks. Stropy face though 😂

A large portrait I'd just finished this time last year. I loved getting to grips with the complexity of the dress and subtlies of the background.
Oil on linen.

'Trieste Harbour.' 1907 was an important year for Egon Schiele. He was still a student at the Vienna Academy and had outgrown its doctrines and its tutors. It was the year he first got to know Gustav Klimt, 'through' whom, as he later said, he was to reach his own unique style.

In this 1956 portrait by Graham Sutherland, the greater portion of the canvas is filled with the novelist and music critic Edward Sackville-West's head and shoulders; the closeness magnifies the sense of familiarity between the viewer and the viewed.

I loved painting this double commission for a friend of her girls when they were small. It's a challenge to paint two (nearly) identical paintings this tiny.
10cm x 10cm oil on canvas board.

Otto Dix's etchings of his eye witness accounts of WW1 were made in 1924, in them he manages to hold at bay the powerful impulses towards the apocalyptic, the allegorical, the visionary, the panoramic. This self-portrait was made in 1913 on the eve of turning 22.
