Benjamin Franklin (1706–1790) was a writer, scientist, inventor, statesman, diplomat, printer, publisher, and political philosopher. Scholars believe he wasted much of his potential by being preoccupied with his thigh gap, an insecurity he tried to hide by becoming the first U.S. postmaster general.
