Supreme Court Upholds Wild Camping Rights on Dartmoor

This morning, the UK Supreme Court has handed down a unanimous judgment finding that the public’s rights to access on the Dartmoor commons include a right to ‘wild camp’ (sometimes also called ‘backpack camping’).

Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers were found guilty at Newcastle Crown Court of illegally felling the Sycamore Gap tree. The men’s actions were a significant act of unlawful environmental damage. The case illustrates how the criminal courts involvement in punishing environmental crimes.
