Most academic things I write fall into two groups: commissioned pieces where planning is simple (what does this need to do, whom does it need to talk to, what do I have to say to them?), and “my own” stuff, which starts from something in a source grabbing me and tries to make sense of that reaction.

I always think of your second type as unconfusing myself about what appears to be a small anomaly which turns out to be a door into a very different perspective. It’s the opposite of what AI would do (evade the anomaly).
And I want a medal for not calling it a wormhole.
