Venus, shines brightly in the southwest at twilight. It sets to the west 2½ hours after dark. Capella is overhead, and Rigel, in Orion's right foot, have almost the same right ascension crossing the sky’s meridian around 9 p.m. As Capella passes its highest point, Rigel marks true south.

Navigating the December morning sky is a great way to start your day! Here are some events for 5 am along the middle northern latitudes:
Jupiter shines low in the west-northwest. Mars slides away from the Beehive cluster in Cancer and on Dec. 18 the bright gibbous Moon lies directly north of Mars.
