Beautiful cichlids. I know many in the hobby prefer the males because of their brighter colors, but I find the females to also look great, especially when they get really big
There is a common misconception that female cichlids are always peaceful, which these two female ruby green cichlids were eager to disprove today. 🐟 #video #fishkeeping

planning to draw all residents as kids. I started with the performer bc I already had an easy visual reference of my design to use. I might do kin/minikin next, but I’m also working on an adult design for mim which is fun

The male boat-tailed grackle is #Black, I swear! But when light interacts with the microscopic structures of their feathers, grackles are irresistibly #iridescent (a new theme for #BirdOfTheDay someday?) #EastCoastKin #birds

Did a character sheet for what I imagined mim to look like from #thelonelyones

If I was a fish I would def say yes if it makes him feel any better.
For several days now, the male‘s having no success with displaying to female no. 2. 🐟 #fishkeeping #video

Beautiful!
The male has also started courting the females. 🐟 #video #fishkeeping

More than 1800 detainees are missing after the closure of Alligator Alcatraz. Their families and lawyers can’t find them and they’ve vanished from the ICE database. Feels like this should be a much bigger story www.miamiherald.com/news/local/i...
Hundreds of Alligator Alcatraz detainees drop off the grid after leaving site
As of the end of August, the whereabouts of two-thirds of more than 1,800 men detained at Alligator Alcatraz during the month of July could not be determined by the Miami Herald.

Oh hey, my new novel, LITTLE NIGHTMARES: THE LONELY ONES, is also eligible for the Bram Stoker Awards if any HWA member liked it well enough to recommend it for the Reading List. It's age 12+, so technically YA, though I consider it upper middle grade. 🙏
Horror folks, it's the middle of September, and the Stoker Recommended Reading List is looking extremely small. If you're a member of the HWA, go recommend something you've read that you loved!

Gorgeous images!
The P. sauvagei from Lake Victoria are so far great fish. One of the most common Victorians in the hobby in part because, unlike most ‚Haplochromis‘-relatives, the females are also colorful. My trio is still young, will be interesting to see them growing up. 🐟 #fishkeeping #photography

They’ve made the executive decision that if the peanut beetle larvae I feed them aren’t pre-crushed they will spit them out and act like I am feeding them poison

We had one of my favorite crabs in the invertebrate teaching lab today! This is Dromidia sp. a carrier crab. Their last pair of legs is modified to carry sponges and other animals as a defensive mechanism. This one is carrying a colonial tunicate. #invertebrates 🦑🦀

Finally finished drawing the performer… the left one I wanted to make look like a paper puppet because those are super cool. I need to make mim now. #littlenightmares #thelonenlyones

Wip on my fan design for the performer from #thelonelyones #littlenightmares book! drew extra joints in some areas and made him look more wrinkly. I also removed the dashes below his eyes but kept the top ones. When I design Mim I plan to give her the bottom dashes so their designs contrast slightly

WAHOO!!
Eventually, this #wahoo will become one of the fastest predators of the open ocean, but for now, it’s just a 1” bebeh.

Shot on #scuba, several miles offshore from West Palm Beach, FL, out over deep water, at night.

Etia nguti might not be the most colorful cichlid, but: 1) named after ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas‘ initials (E. T.ia), 2) sister to the hyperdiverse East African Radiation, comprising at least 1,300 species 🐟🧪
