Do you condone the practice of leaking and anonymous briefing?
Ellie It saddens me greatly that members feel the need to go to the press to have their voices heard in our party. There’s a real power imbalance in our party that must be corrected. I condemn leaks which have betrayed trust and confidentiality, and anonymous sources briefing right-wing rags. Iris It is deeply upsetting to me that such a large cohort of our membership do not feel confident matters will be addressed in the party without going to the press. We must rebuild trust in our party and bridge the divisions which may be holding us back from wider electoral successes. All party members deserve the right to be heard and respected, even if I disagree with their opinions or sentiment. Seonad In an ideal world, members would not be forced into a situation where they felt the need to leak to the press. However, there are clear cultural and welfare issues in our party which have not been addressed adequately despite significant time being given to discussing them. I can understand why some members have resorted to these practices after raising issues in good faith and having unfair allegations levelled at them by people in positions of power.

How would you maintain a connection with membership within your constituency/region and avoid the disconnect that can occur while focusing on the hard work required in Holyrood?
Ellie How would you maintain a connection with membership within your constituency/region and avoid the disconnect that can occur while focusing on the hard work required in Holyrood? As well as quarterly surgeries and regular newsletters for local members, I will be an MSP embedded in our local communities. This means working closely with our brilliant councillor group, regularly campaigning and canvassing with local members, and being an active and enthusiastic supporter of our local branches. Iris Its vital all level of our politics works like a well oiled machine. I commit to holding membership surgeries, regular newsletters and forging close relationships with our rep groups, bringing together the grassroots work of our councillor group, with the work of the national cohort and our party apparatus. I commit to being an MSP who will allow myself to be held accountable directly to our membership, including townhall style meetings to seek improvements to our policy record. Seonad As a councillor, I hold regular surgeries in my ward, and I would continue this as an MSP to ensure that I was hearing directly from constituents on a regular basis. As mentioned in a previous answer, I would work hard to maintain a positive relationship with the branch and rep groups, taking any criticism from them in the spirit that it is intended and adapting my ways of working appropriately to ensure that their views are always heard and fairly represented.

How do we achieve Independence? Politicians or people power?
Ellie People power. Tying the independence movement to the popularity of the SNP government has been a mistake and a failure - we will only achieve our independence by building mass grassroots support to such an extent that the UK government can no longer ignore us. Iris Independence is a movement not confined to one party but across various communities. The only way we can achieve independence is by making it a real tangible goal with real tangible changes, setting out a concise, radical vision of an independent Scotland that reflects the diversity and needs of our country. Seonad I think we need both. I entered party politics because I was completely devastated by the result of the 2014 independence referendum, and thought that joining a political party was the best way to advance the cause. That said, we need a diverse, grassroots movement advocating for independence to move the campaign back up the political agenda and force politicians' hands.

How do you plan to capture attention away from the encroaching far-right?
Ellie We can take the fight directly to the far-right by offering a genuine, left-wing alternative which will improve people’s lives. We must talk more about how the enemy of the working class arrives here by private jet, not small boat. We need to be unapologetic in standing up for minorities. Iris Green politics must be politics rooted in the everyday problems of the average person and must be presented as such. Whilst we have the policies, it requires the relatability and politicians to who being working class is not theoretical. Politics has changed and we must change with it, reflecting a modern Scotland and not being afraid to challenge the way politics is done. Seonad I spend a significant time out canvassing, speaking to Glaswegians about their concerns and priorities. We need to prioritise addressing the issues which people have immediate concerns about - investing in social housing to prevent homelessness and overcrowding, investing in health and social care, and providing sustainable jobs for the future. People are less vulnerable to the snake oil salesmen of the far right when their lives are materially improving.

Do you consider the current commitment to £15million on international development and £36million on international climate justice fund to be sufficient?
Ellie Scotland should be an outward looking country - through wealth redistribution we could raise billions to fund public services at home, and international development and climate justice abroad. It sickens me that Scotland’s public money continues to be funnelled to the arms trade - this should be redirected to these international priorities. Iris No. These are pennies compared to the wealth in our state that is currently sitting in the hands of a very few. We share this planet and we all share the onus to protect it, we cannot allow our efforts and states be weakened by the faults of unambitious governments. Seonad No. As part of the British Empire, Scotland profited from the wealth and labour of countries and peoples across the globe for centuries. We must pay our way in reparations, particularly to regions which face the sharp end of climate change in the immediate future.

How will you ensure that you will work as a team with your fellow MSPs, if elected?
Ellie Good communication is vital, as is the ability to discuss and debate issues respectfully - including embracing healthy disagreement. All MSPs will be working from the same manifesto, based on the same PRD. Regular communication with each other, as well as the members we represent, will be key to our success. Iris Each MSP will have different priorities, by helping to bring together our shared priorities as well as a recognition we are working from the same manifesto for the same party. Whilst disagreements are inevitable, through a collaborative approach I’m confident we will put our party on the right track. Seonad I'm known for being a collaborative person, both from my time as Glasgow branch co-convenor and as a Glasgow councillor. Any new team takes some time to establish ways of working which bring out the best of everyone and accomplishes optimally. Communication and transparency are key, as well as recognising each members' strengths. Disagreement and debate is to be encouraged as long as it is respectful and leads to better outcomes.

What are your priorities for finding a way out of the cost of living crisis?
Ellie We urgently need to redistribute wealth. The Scottish Parliament could raise an additional £3.3 billion for public services using its existing powers - by taxing the rich we can put money back into the pockets of ordinary working people through reformed taxation, cheaper public transport and nationalised, well-funded public services. Iris 1 in 3 children in Glasgow currently live in poverty, with little being done to lift them out of it. Not only should we be taxing the rich, but it is my belief that we need a fundamental reshaping of society, where no individual falls under a minimum living threshold. However, it is incorrect to address the cost-of-living crisis without confronting the underclass that is often ignored. Ensuring every individual has access to housing, heating and eating is an immediate must and will guide my initial approach. Seonad Tax the rich. Economic inequality is incredibly negative for society. There is plenty of wealth in Scotland. We must redistribute it so that the wealthy pay their fair share and everyone has a liveable income. We must also harness our wealth in renewable energy for the benefit of Scotland’s people rather than for the benefit of energy company shareholders.

Do they think economic growth is a suitable target for our society?
Ellie No. Economic growth is a meaningless metric for success - you can’t have infinite growth on a finite planet. Instead we should be focussing on metrics which tangibly improve people’s lives. A wellbeing economy is part of this. We must be ambitious in our aspirations for the people of Scotland. Iris No. I’m a socialist. Seonad Absolutely not. Rampant capitalism is destroying our planet. We should be using wellbeing as an indicator for societal improvement. The wellbeing of people and planet can be improved concurrently and holistically if we shift the focus away from economic growth.

What policies and positions should the party be advocating to gain credibility and support in rural and island areas?
Ellie Although Carmunnock is about as rural as the Glasgow region gets, it’s up to all MSPs to ensure rural and island voices are heard in our parliament. In particular, improving public transport to make it cheaper, more regular, reliable and accessible is a vital policy for island and rural communities. I strongly believe in subsidiarity and believe our local authorities should have more powers, including to tackle the housing crisis by clamping down on short-term lets and owners of multiple properties - this is all the more important for Scotland’s rural and island communities. Iris It is my belief that each community across our country requires a tailored approach that is often being failed by Holyrood. A strong communitarian approach, focusing on devolving power away from Edinburgh and into the hands of local people. We must take the democracy our party endeavours to empower hand to the local people, not political elites. Seonad We need to be addressing the day to day issues which disproportionately affect people living in rural and island areas. In my opinion, key priorities should be improving public transport links and cutting costs for people to heat their homes. I am a Gaelic learner and think there is more we could be doing to promote Gàidhlig language, culture and heritage, which is very important to many rural and island communities.

How would you seek to improve accountability of our MSPs, allowing members to ensure they are representing our views and positions accurately?
Ellie I believe in grassroots democracy, and as your MSP I will centre your voice in all my work in the Scottish Parliament. I’ll hold quarterly surgeries with members across the city, I’ll send a regular members’ newsletter and I’ll prioritise transparency and accountability in all my work. Iris The best part of our party is our entirely democratic structure. As an MSP I will centre this approach in my work ensuring to keep members at the very core of my policy decisions. I’ll hold members surgeries, endeavour to hold specific policy discussions and work collaboratively across the branch to define our priorities. Seonad I am a very transparent person and have strong links with Glasgow branch from my recent tenure as branch co-convenor. If elected, I will attend branch councils and big branch meetings, engage with members on Slack and engage with rep groups. I will encourage my colleagues to take similar approaches, ensuring that the grassroots voice of membership is understood and represented at Holyrood.

What is your stand on the threats to disabled people’s rights and wellbeing in 2020s Britain?
Ellie Britain doesn’t work for disabled people - from our benefits system, to the accessibility of public spaces, to our housing stock, to the state of our NHS. I’ll consider the impacts on disabled people in all of my work in Parliament, and will fight for a more equal, more accessible society. Iris The disgraceful approach by both our governments towards disabled people is a direct part of the neoliberal ideology that rules our state. The idea of one size fits all and ‘economic activity’ being the defining characteristics if our modern world doesn’t work for our communities. Disabled people must not only be integrated in all stages of policy making but must be uplifted to challenge the prevalent ableism in our political sphere. As a disabled person, I believe it’s important that a radical opposition to this neoliberal consensus is presented, to secure our rights against the state. Seonad The needs of disabled people must be taken into account during all stages of policy and legislative development. Scotland’s welfare system is less cruel and more humane than Westminster's, but there is still room for improvement. Disabled people must not be an afterthought, their voices need to be heard in Holyrood. I very much hope that through this selection process, we will select several strong disabled candidates.

What will you do to fight the rising transphobia in our culture?
Ellie For far too long, politicians in Holyrood have discussed trans people without a single one of us represented in the chamber. I’ll uplift other trans voices and give a platform to my community which has been brutally under attack, and put a focus on the woeful state of trans healthcare. Iris Transphobia, like many bigotries, is being empowered by establishment forces intent on distracting people from the material circumstances around them. For too long our community has been othered in the political debate, not given a platform or a space at the table. If selected I will fight to not only humanise our community but to uplift our voices and force them in the room. There can be nothing about us without us. Seonad I am horrified by the negative impact which the EHRC's interpretation of the Supreme Court's decision has had on trans people in Scotland, provoking anxiety and fear. I am standing on a slate with two trans women because I believe that trans voices are needed in Holyrood to protect the human rights of trans people.

Would you describe yourself as an ecosocialist or a socialist?
Ellie Both. I am a proud socialist, I believe that wealth should be radically redistributed from the rich to the working classes, and I believe that workers should own and control the means of production. As Chico Mendes said, “environmentalism without class struggle is just gardening”. Iris Green politics is the politics of a fair society, which is socialist politics. I am proudly a working-class socialist fighting for people and planet. Ultimately, we must fight for a planet that everyone can live on, away from the perils of capitalism and climate change. Seonad An ecosocialist. There is no point in achieving socialism if we no longer have a liveable habitat. We must combine environmental justice with social justice to ensure a fairer future for all.

Do you support the decriminalisation of abortion in Scotland?
Ellie Yes. Women and pregnant people still continue to be prosecuted for abortions in Scotland and change is long overdue. The current process is overly complex, requiring two doctors to sign-off on any abortion, which can be disproportionately challenging for marginalised women to obtain. Decriminalisation is desperately needed. Iris Reproductive rights should be under no question. Scotland needs to follow the lead of England and Wales and repeal the archaic laws governing women’s bodies. It is the onus of our politicians to lead the way and fight for a support first approach, refusing to stigmatise the medical needs of our population. It is not the role of the state to control our bodies. Seonad Yes. We have seen a very worrying trend in the USA of women's reproductive rights being rolled back. We must not allow that to happen in Scotland. Women should always have the right to choose and should not be criminalised for exercising their right to bodily autonomy.
