galck+ (formerly The Gay and Lesbian Coalition of Kenya) is the national Sexual Orientation Gender Identity and Expression (SOGIE) umbrella body representing LGBTQ+ voices across Kenya.
The name change was a result of growth and intersectionality in the Kenyan LGBTQ+ movement.

The beginning of the sexual rights movement in the Middle East and North Africa began to take shape in the late 1990s and early 2000s, which can be seen in an increased level of politicization and public engagement around issues of gender and sexuality.

In 2001, Rivera attempted to revive STAR as a political organization — changing the "T" to stand for "Transgender," which was beginning to come into common usage.

Sarah Hegazi was born in 1989 to an Egyptian conservative middle-class family; she was the eldest of four siblings. She helped her mother take care of her siblings after her father died.
Hegazi wore the hijab until she came out as a lesbian in 2016.

Hande Kader was a politically active Turkish transgender woman.
Kader became a figurehead for the LGBT community after being photographed at the forefront of the resistance against police forces suppressing the 2015 Gay Pride event in Istanbul.

17-year-old Marsha met 11-year-old Sylvia Rivera, a Puerto Rican trans girl who was also new to New York.
The two became friends; Marsha taught Sylvia how to apply makeup, live on the street, and look out for trouble. She also encouraged Sylvia to love herself and her identity.

After graduating high school, Marsha moved to New York City with only $15 and a bag of clothes. She began dressing almost exclusively in women’s clothes and adopted the full name Marsha P. Johnson. The "P" stood for "Pay It No Mind."

The 1st wave (late 1990s-early 2000s) of sexual rights movements in the MENA region brought forth new collectives & projects to grapple with issues of personal freedoms & health (HIV/AIDS), such as Club Free and Hurriyat Khasa in Lebanon and a group working on HIV/AIDS in Algeria

Most of the focus of queer activism at the time involved fitting homosexuals into existing legal structures — getting marriage equality, overturning Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, passing the Matthew Shepard Act, etc.
These were not Rivera’s priorities, and she made it quite well known.

Rivera was increasingly left out of a movement that was focusing on going mainstream. Still she rallied, protested and got arrested in the name of what she believed in, earning her the title of "The Rosa Parks of the Modern Transgender Movement."

HELEM, the first Arab LGBTQ organization, was part of relief efforts to support refugees and internally displaced people from south Lebanon during the 2006 Israeli attack.
Its offices became well known throughout the country as a place of refuge, support and donation collection.

Sylvia Rivera’s grandmother took care of her for a period of time, but voiced her disapproval not only of Rivera’s mixed background that made her skin darker than she preferred (Venezuelan and Puerto Rican), but also of her behavior, which was deemed too effeminate "for a boy".

Femminielli are traditionally believed to bring good luck; for this reason, it is popular in the neighborhoods for a femminiello to hold a newborn baby
