As children, my grandparents were deported to Kazakhstan b/c they were of German origin from Poland and Ukraine. They never finished school and were so proud when I graduated. I think about them every single day. 🥲

When Knut tried to to something completely different, he came across an interesting arrangement using matter-wave arrays to do inertial sensing and EM field measurements - read up here

Multi-axis inertial sensing with 2D matter-wave arrays
Atom interferometry is an exquisite measurement technique sensitive to inertial forces. However, it is commonly limited to a single sensitive axis, allowing high-precision multi-dimensional sensing…

Hang in there friends :(
Happy new year! And remember, if you have the choice between being a great scientist or a great person, be a great person

But most of all, don't give in to cynicism or apathy. [...] it's gonna happen no matter what. But it doesn't have to. Never forget that: it doesn't have to happen.

Thanks so much @dereklowe.bsky.social

No idea whether some algorithm changed but I am delighted to see so many new followers. Might actually take this as an opportunity to ramp up ops here.
Welcome to all new followers and keep it quantum!

Our friends @TUdarmstadt and @uulm develop a new quantum field theory
for atoms, which could improve high precision clocks and matter-wave
interferometers, paving the way for novel fundamental-physics tests

Quantum Field Theory for Multipolar Composite Bosons with Mass Defect and Relativistic Corrections
An effective quantum field theory for composite bosons is proposed that could facilitate modeling higher precision clocks and matter-wave interferometers including relativistic effects.

Time-averaged potentials have become a real work horse in the group. Besides fundamental work on building the rubidium source for the 10 m VLBAI facility, Doro has shed light on a lot of unexpected challenges when it comes to painted potentials.

Congrats, Dr. Doro!
On 10th April 2024, Doro embossed her name in the VLBAI hall of fame. Over the past years, time-averaged potentials have become a real work horse in the group. Recently, besides fundamental work on bu...

Allow me to self-advertise this one because I'm pretty excited about it: when trying to do something much different we accidentally found out that sensing with scalable BEC arrays is a lot of fun 😎

It's been a bit of a long ride so can I maybe interest you in some atom source technology for quantum inertial sensors?
