If a slave has taken refuge with you, do not hand them over to their master. Let them live among you wherever they like and in whatever town they choose. Do not oppress them.

Dr. Paloma Muñoz got her PhD in Anthropology studying my wife’s religion (Catholic). Here she is doing fieldwork for her dissertation.

It is not uncommon for western cultures to consider non-western cultures as “abnormal” here in America.

It’s been going on for some five centuries, now here in America, and is itself worthy of study.
The scientific study of religion is a study of abnormal psychology. That's the only reason to study it. How do evil people use it to control so many? Why does it completely disrupt their ability for reason?

The second fundamental aspect to her religion that my wife told me about three decades ago is a funeral ritual called Los Funerales Del. Angelitos, when an infant or small child (age 7 or under) dies.

When my wife was a child, more than six decades ago, there was a rumor going around Patia that the Virgin Maria had appeared at the top of el cerro del Manzanillo, so my wife and her friend climbed to the top, to see if they could see Her.

El cerro del Manzanillo is a magical mythological and geographical place located at the very center of the world, the Axis Mundi, where heaven meets earth and hell.

Their descendants, whenever they felt sad, would also climb el cerro del Manzanillo, and look out to see if they could see Africa, and when they could not, they too would play their drums and cry.

Over time all of those tears coalesced to form a lake.

Three decades ago, my wife told me about 2 fundamental aspects of her culture/religion (Catholic).

One of them was about el cerro del Manzanillo.

Centuries ago, her ancestors, as cimarrones, ran away from their masters, and eventually made their way to el Valle del Patia.

Another battle in the war between church and state.
The aftermath of an ICE raid on a church in Charlotte, North Carolina, has devastated families, leaving them heartbroken by the separations caused by the raid.

My wife’s ancestors were famous (or infamous) for a religious/cultural practice called “descarne” or “abigeato”, which was considered as the crime of cattle rustling by the colonial state back in the 1700s.

It’s a very important part of her religion (Catholic).

There’s lots of cool things about western cultures, but in their defense, is this really the hill that westerners want to die on?

This isn’t a contest.

There is no prize.
This part of the US far-right infighting has never made sense to me.🤷🏿‍♂️

What they have planned for Jewish people is so much worse than what they have planned for Hispanic or Asian or even Black people. Slavery is awful, but it's survivable. They're not planning to eliminate all Black people on earth.
Ben Shapiro recently attacked Tucker Carlson and Nick Fuentes. Not surprising. But he had another target that would have seemed baffling just a week ago: the Heritage Foundation.

I’ve found that actually listening to Black Women can be instructive.

If I want to understand my wife’s Black Catholic culture, who was born right next to the center of the world in her religion, listening to her has been instrumental in figuring out who the actual experts are. It helps me focus.

Please stop defending these confederate losers.

This is the 21st century, for God’s sake!

My wife’s Catholic culture fought numerous religious wars over this stuff centuries ago.

You openly admitted that if you were chained to the bottom of a slave ship during the Middle Passage that you wouldn’t have much trust in your captors.

So you have empathy for yourself in a similar situation.

But empathy for others is somehow outside of your lane and beyond your grasp.

Weird.
