@shetlandwildlife nature & Up Helly Aa ❤️ Sept gave us a dry run of the biting winds. ‘feels like -12C’ a🥶I’ve never experienced.

Waxwing, a passing vagrant. With little bushes/trees an apple in the garden must have felt like a gold mine. #birdingscotland #waxwing #scotland

Super cropped and noisy image, yet stillI seen! Little Bittern seen in Extremadura last year . Unlike the local Bittern that I dipped (check me and the lingo 😆) yesterday. All part of the fun. Would love to hear that boom! Another time…. #littlebittern #Bittern #extremadura #twitching

A male Kingfisher. His breast was a bright orange glowing globe in the light. As a kid I imagined this bird with a crown fishing. I have never stopped being excited by that regal flash of blue. These last few years I have appreciated closer views. #birdingscotland #kingfisher #edinburghwildlife

One step beyond….

This female Blackbird was chasing any morsel it could find, as the frost hit. There has been significant decline in this common bird due to Usuru virus. BTO ran Black Birds in the garden Project to understand it’simpact. #birdingscotland #blackbirdsinthegarden #bto

Really enjoyed getting out over the last few days, hoping it will recharge for the week ahead.

Winter sun and feeding time. Not sure which won here?

One of the foxes I saw just before Xmas was there again last night. The same spot and time.

We shared glances, the city oblivious….we both slipped back into the night. #FoxOfTheDay #UrbanFoxes #EdinburghWildlife

End of the year was spent in good company, two days out in the trot,a new record, and so worth it!

We had a flyby Kingfisher, a resting Sparrowhawk and a lovely family of Long-tailed Tits who were feeling the cold. #sheclicksnet #birdingscotland #edinburghwildlife #longtailedtit

So good to have @malcolmjsc.bsky.social back posting #birdingscotland
First birding outing after surgery, we went to Penicuik to see if we could see a water rail (more on that later). As we crossed the North Esk, a dipper was spotlighted by a beam of light passing through the trees. #birdwatching #scotland

More Waxwings? Oh go on then!

Continuing the birding trivia a group of waxwings are called an "ear-full" or a "museum" of waxwings. Who knew! #birdingacotland #waxwings #birdingtrivia #edinburghwildlife

Life has been a bit full on. I took myself out the other day to explore a part of the city I hadn’t t been to before. It felt very serene, a much welcomed respite. I slowed down, explored watched some Jackdaws exploring in perfect light…and then came word of the Waxwings!

I never tire of seeing these incredible birds. Their name comes from the red tips, that appear as if dipped in wax. What I learned today was that red pigmentation comes from the berries they eat. Seems obvious, yet I hadn’t considered it! Love nature #waxwing #birdingscotland

Plans of posting pics from the past few days, highlights etc….

The day ran away with itself, took myself out for a walk and caught up with friends instead, and this lovely sunset.

Be kind to you eh?

A fantastic day watching the Waxwing (it pays to step) . I loved catching up with people, those who had never seen a Waxwing, the kids who were just so excited! The woman who had spotted them years ago and thought they must be an escapee…(1/2) #waxwings #birdingscotland

Thinking of warmer climes, as this cold sets in. 🤒
This stunning Blue Rock Thrush taken in Estremadura earlier this year. Favouring rocky outcrops, feeds on insects and small invertebrates.

Im in need of more adventures!

Making a conscious effort to try and shake up a very urban garden. The other day we had a judge come to visit.

Someone who has more knowledge than me said it’s this years bird due to the pale fingers to the coverts. I love stuff like that! Please share the geekery!

Caw! Caw!

Scavenging around the shoreline, this Crow letting its voice heard. Feathers glistening in the early morning sun.

Crows mate for life, something I personally did not know about them. #crowfacts
