"the purpose of a system is what it does" is maybe the most useful phrase in all sociopolitical analysis. It's important to remember that what a structure purports to do is entirely irrelevant to its role in society. Institutions are not tools that bend. You cannot reconcile with social machines.

3 years ago today, Riot Games offered me a job making more money than I ever thought I’d make in my life. I had 19 interviews over 2.5 months to get it. Partner and I were moving to LA for it. I put in notice at my job and apartment.

my wife worked for a catholic hospital and gave birth to our last child there and _their own obstetrician_ told her to get her tubes tied because it was _medically necessary_ and the hospital wouldn't allow it to be done with her c-section because it was against their beliefs, even though we're jews
Many people dismissed the announcement Catholic hospitals will ban gender-affirming care nationwide under the assumption that there will be other options. In reality, Catholic hospitals make up as much 46% of options in some states. This map is 2020, prior to Trump’s assault on safety net hospitals.
