not such a fun fact that Ral and Garu may have a similar backstory involving an abusive family. That's also one of the reasons why Ral wants to take care of him. Meanwhile, Ren knows more about Garu's family background and has slight differences in why She should protect this kid (and Ral. Probably)

but since Garu and Ren have the same interest in science and cutting edge technology, it's not that long till they're getting along

Ren often has awkward moments with the kids. She's having a hard time communicating with children because how the work-life treated her.

I won't tell how they get engaged, but both seems don't really have strong romantic feelings towards each other (at first). They just feel like being best buddies and live together to take care of Garu at that time and to giving him another chance to get adopted legally.
