Our work is guided by something deeper than check lists and templates; we're always looking inward to reflect and outward toward community. Thinking of everyone working for justice and compassion during these times - we're not giving up.

"The stories included here come from a community of practice of NM–based nonprofits launched in early 2025, and from recent clients. And although they are inspiring, the bottom line is that the withdrawal of federal funds is harming the sector." nonprofitquarterly.org/nonprofits-d...

We returned to our local economy consulting roots in '25, working with the City of Santa Fe Econ Dev on an initiative to support local businesses, create more neighborhood placemaking opportunities, and educate consumers on the importance and real impact of spending at locally owned businesses. 1/5

Australia holds a special place for us (Vicki lived there/our recent article featured the social sector there) and we spent time checking in with Aussie friends/family this week. While no one we know was personally affected by the horrific shooting, we are *all* impacted by this event, of course 🕯️😔

We were honored to host @nundahcoop.bsky.social on a tour and exchange of ideas on social enterprises this fall. And now we're honored we get to share some of the takeaways in @npquarterly.bsky.social !

Read: Social Enterprise: Lessons from Down Under - nonprofitquarterly.org/social-enter...
Social Enterprise: Lessons from Down Under | Nonprofit Quarterly | Civic News. Empowering Nonprofits. Advancing Justice.

Locally owned businesses contribute more money to the local tax base for needed services like libraries, first responders, emergency services, and contribute much more on average to local nonprofit organizations and civic groups/nonprofits in the form of volunteer time and donations.

More reasons to keep it local: Chain stores typically pay the minimum wage (sometimes the living wage if a city or state has that), but locally owned businesses typically offer more than the living wage and offer better benefits and perks in order to compete with chains and corporations.

Nope, that’s not a typo! Instead of Cyber Monday, a day when online merchants offer special deals, we invite you to a new tradition, CIDER MONDAY.

On average, 48% of each purchase at local independent businesses is recirculated locally, compared to less than 14 % of purchases at chain stores.

I recently told a colleague that my blood pressure immediately goes down when I enter a bookstore or start a new book, so I thought I’d share some good books that are also useful for these chaotic and difficult times. Plus, they just might inspire some social impact ideas for you, too! — Vicki
