Papasmoothie, the Executive Producer on Wild Rift, replied DIRECTLY to us on twitter.

They've acknowledged the whitewashing of Mel and have promised that she will look accurate to her Arcane design upon her release in March! This is why we should always speak up!

Despite being an adult in the same age range as her, Jayce is often referred to as a boy, a baby, etc. by the fandom when critiquing Mel's interactions with him.

Mel is never afforded the same treatment. I wonder why?

Any analysis of Mel Medarda doesn't exist in a vacuum. She is fictional but real people - specifically white people - with biases wrote her.

Real people - especially white people - watched the show and also had some of those same biases. Those biases shape how she is seen and characterized.

-and the subtle ways she manipulated Jayce into doing what she wanted. All of these things are part of her character, part of the fact she thought she had to follow Ambessa standard, and it is crucial to the way she grows up to reject such belief and become her own person.
