Read this 22-post thread on how academic, NIH-based, and private sector research, with and without NIH funding, have worked together to develop a novel pain medication that acts outside the brain, reducing its addictive potential and helping to address the opioid crisis.
I have been trying to find the time to move away from the polical hellscape we find ourselves in to finish and share a bluetorial about science.

This helps me remember what this is all about.

Ironically, it is about the treatment of pain.

Trump officials have terminated more than 300 staffers at the National Nuclear Security Administration without realizing that they oversee America’s nuclear weapons.

They are now trying to rescind the terminations.

I have been talking to the media, Time, Fortune, NBC, etc., to explain how the onslaught on science and NIH will impact the health of all Americans. Everyone knows someone who has cancer, heart disease, or depression. Spread the word about how cutting science impacts all.

“We just had word that all our fellows and post doc staff are laid off effective immediately. The famous Epidemic Intelligence Service, aka the Disease Detectives, is no more. That’s 1260 staff.

They are calling this ‘Phase 1’.”

Before my admin appointments in various dean positions I was a member on our Tenure and Promotions committee. IMHO there is no committee more important than this committee.

At the same time T&P at medical schools is complex based on the diverse contributions of faculty.

My experiences on the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Professorial Promotions Committee with some thoughts about scholarship vs fund raising success, team science, hyperproductivity, and the age distribution of the professoriate.
