Philadelphia reflected in windows.
First time in 381 days that I can say I’m proud to be an American.

Should be shared and reshared, again and again and again
No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition.

Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology
She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.

This is a piece I wrote for carillon (cathedral bells) this past summer in Paris. Its opening is based on the peal of bells at Sacre Coeur that @chrisinparis.bsky.social might recognize (thus the French title) but I was really thinking about the end of an era in history…

Walked through Philadelphia’s Italian Market today after a long absence. Great to see old faces and new places! But sad that some mainstays gone too. Still think it’s the best street in Philly 😻

Was in Philadelphia city hall today…such a gorgeous building in the best country in America! (we often talk about Philadelphia being its own separate country in light of recent events…)

Every NYE there is a Twilight Zone marathon on TV and I think I’m going to propose a course at Rutgers where we just watch episodes of the Twilight Zone and do readings based on them. I mean it covers almost all of human psychology! Maybe this year I just should go for it…

Me playing a Christmas carol (an arrangement of In Dulci Jubilo) on the Rockefeller carillon at the University of Chicago. At 105 tons, it is the largest musical instrument ever built. Have a happy holiday!

Christmas Eve Feast of seven fishes here in Philly. It’s an Italian American thing with origins in southern Italy. We substitutes sushi for bacala because no one in my family likes salted cod! But we had salmon, flounder, crab, clam, scallop, and shrimp.
