Just received the Armed Conflict Survey 2025 published by Routledge. This year's edition has been both challenging and rewarding. Together with my never-ending love affair with #Libya, I had also the opportunity to delve into #Iraq, #Syria and #Turkey, writing the chapters for these conflicts.

'By maintaining such a large military presence in the Caribbean, even after the Maduro operation, Trump had fewer options to respond to the violence in Iran and also had to consider the fact that Tehran was likely to make good on its threat to retaliate against any U.S. actions.'

'In a post-Western world, an essentially Western social science discipline was rapidly losing depth.'

An illuminating piece on the crisis of conflict studies, a discipline that is running the risk of revealing itself as an 'imperial science' that has only served the interests of the West.
In the new @dissentmag.bsky.social issue, out today, @yguichaoua.bsky.social and I diagnose the crisis of conflict studies in a piece that is part intellectual history, part personal experience.

What was conflict studies for? And what can its travails tell us about how wars have changed?
