Did you know? Memorial Day began as Decoration Day after the Civil War. See how California prisons paid tribute to the country’s fallen soldiers. I penned this piece in 2019 but it’s worth revisiting:

Mormon Island, a town submerged under the waters of Folsom Lake after the dam was built in the 1950s near Folsom State Prison. During the drought in 2008 and 2013, I wrote a series of newspaper articles on the ruins of Red Bank emerging from the low water. #FolsomLake #MormonIsland #AmericanRiver
