Mathematician, musician, dog-lover, campaigner for proportional representation. I developed the PREVAIL voting system, prevail.org.uk - an innovative, transparent PR system for the Westminster general election.
Under the PREVAIL voting system, if an independent candidate tops the poll then they are automatically elected. What about the other voters who voted for a party? Their votes still count towards their party's total vote at Westminster and therefore to the number of seats it will be allocated.

With the PREVAIL voting system, an over quota party will keep its best seats, up to its quota, and its remaining seats will be transferred to under quota parties to bring them up to quota.
January 30, 2026 at 11:34 AM
Under PREVAIL a party's quota of Westminster seats is the number that accords with its % of the popular vote. An under quota party is one that came first in fewer seats than its quota, eg the Greens Such a party will be allocated additional seats to bring it up to quota.

With the PREVAIL voting system, if you vote for a party you are directly influencing how many seats that party will gain in Parliament, regardless of what happens in your constituency. Furthermore, the number of seats your party gets will be in exact proportion to its national share of the vote.

MPs defecting removes seats from parties that won them at the last election. Another shortcoming of FPTP.
Under PREVAIL, seats are won by parties not individual MPs. This is as it should be - the constituency should not wag the Parliamentary dog!

Time to move away from outdated voting methods (inc STV) where constituencies have too much sway. PREVAIL is Parliamentary based.
January 1, 2026 at 12:26 PM
Existing PR voting systems (including STV) are outdated. They are overly concerned with local constituency representation.

PREVAIL puts Parliament first.

PREVAIL is an innovative electoral voting system:

- puts Parliament before constituencies
- very few wasted votes
- guarantees perfect PR

A different approach to Parliamentary democracy

PREVAIL is a completely different approach to political representation. Parliament is put first before constituencies. Perfect PR is guaranteed from single seat constituencies.

Percentage wasted votes at the UK General Election of 2024:

FPTP : 73.7%
PREVAIL: 3.3%

Under PREVAIL the only wasted votes are those for a party that did not win a single seat or an independent candidate that did not win.

By elections are an anachronism! In a real democracy a party that wins a seat should hold it until the next election.

The STV is used in regional and local assemblies, councils etc around the world. But it is little used for national parliaments. Polling shows that UK voters wishto retain single seat constituencies.
In constantly promoting STV the Electoral Reform Society is failing to address these issues.

Norway's General Election has produced a very proportional result. But theirs is a complex party list system with between 4 and 20 seats per constituency.
In the UK the public favours retaining single seat constituencies. PREVAIL is the solution for us.

Talk today about the % of wasted votes at the last election.

Under FPTP a vote for other than the winning candidate is completely wasted - you might as well have not voted.

Under PREVAIL the winning candidate may have a low % but almost no votes are wasted - they count in Parliament.

Important though your local MP is, Parliament and the decisions made there are far more important. PREVAIL puts Parliament first. Almost every vote made in a constituency will influence the make up of Parliament.
August 22, 2025 at 10:25 AM
PREVAIL is not just another PR voting system (of which there are many). Most PR systems are constituency focused wherein lies their unpredictability. Uniquely PREVAIL puts Parliament first guaranteeing perfect PR. The vast majority of voters would be able to say their vote counted in Parliament.

Polly Toynbee's article in the Guardian yesterday shows that the quest for PR is rudderless and lacks knowledge and understanding of the issues and choices relating to PR. The public deserves better than this and needs it if an informed decision is to be made on PR when the time comes.

There is currently a great deal of momentum for proportional representation, #PRNow, from pressure groups and political influencers. But there is almost no discussion about what form of PR. We need an open discussion about this. Voters should be made aware of the choices available.
July 7, 2025 at 10:35 AM
A year on from Labour's election victory is clear more than ever that we need #PRNow.
The PREVAIL voting system will bring certainty and stability to UK politics.
July 4, 2025 at 9:53 AM
The popular vote is the gold standard in democracy. PREVAIL is the only voting system that guarantees delivery on this.
June 29, 2025 at 11:18 AM
With the latest Social Attitude Survey from National Centre for Social Research showing an all time high level of support (60%) for reforming the Westminster election system it is time for PREVAIL - redefining political representation for the 21st century.

PREVAIL: Redefining political representation for the 21st century #PR
Retains single seat constituencies
Voters vote for one party or independent
Guarantees perfect proportional representation
Virtually no wasted votes
Encourages voting for small parties
June 13, 2025 at 11:33 AM
With #FPTP the small constituency tail wags the large parliamentary dog. With the PREVAIL #PR voting system the large dog is in charge. It allows the tail to wag a little!

PREVAIL redefines political representation for the 21st century.
June 9, 2025 at 10:22 AM
With the PREVAIL #PRnow voting system there are no by-elections. A party keeps its seat until the next General Election.
