"Indian jugaad manifests individual creativity constrained by resources. An infrastructure of knowledge, critique and collaboration, and the ability to iterate and fail would take this innate creativity and build societal innovation. Yet as a society, we lack this" - #RuchiGupta, Substack

What a terrific column from #BobClementstheWriter, three of whose books I am scheduled to publish, starting some time in 2026 (dates, etc, just being settled in the next few weeks):

You could say, "How astonishing!"

Or you could say, "Oh, not in this as well!"

Or you could say, "And what did you expect?!"

OpenAI is huge in India. Its models are steeped in caste bias.
India is OpenAI’s second-largest market, but ChatGPT and Sora reproduce caste stereotypes that harm millions of people.

Not sure if "Left" is any longer an appropriate term for this but, at present I have no better to term to offer, so let's stick with "Left".

To my mind, the question raised by this piece is: Is there not a parallel situtation right around the world?

The legacy of Indian socialism can’t be allowed to fade away. It’s the Left we need
Its ideas are critical for us today. It’s time to recall, repurpose and renew its political and ideological resources.

"Transformed by India" was, even for someone like me who doesn’t often read memoirs, a delight. And, although I’ve never made it to the Subcontinent, now I want to go.
