So the puppy learned* how to go up the stairs over the holiday weekend. But he hasn't learned how to go DOWN the stairs. So he darts up & then cries or barks to be carried back down. This is great. Awesome.
* My brother-in-law taught him. Yes, he knows I'm still mad about it.

Charlie hasn’t figured out how to go up the stairs yet. Instead he just looks sad & whines until the person who has deserted him forever returns.

It turns out puppy teeth are a lot like kitten teeth, they feel like needles & can break skin. Which is generally manageable by distracting with chew toys. Until you’re lying on the floor playing with the dog, and he decides his next chew toy is going to be LAUNCHING TEETH-FIRST AT YOUR FACE.

with the holidays upon us please enjoy my favorite miss manners column (circa 2002)

DEAR MISS MANNERS: A couple of years ago, my wife and I attended the wedding of two people who had been friends of ours for years. One year ago, the woman left the man for another man. We heard all about it from the man but heard nothing from the woman as we live in separate towns.

We received a little Christmas package from the woman who, in her note, made no reference to her infidelity -- an act that considerably affected all who were friends of the pair.

I felt instinctively the need to thank her for the gift and card, but I didn't feel as if I should ignore the issue of her leaving
her husband. In the end, I wrote a thank-you note and told her what I thought of the situation - not in excoriating terms but in bluntly honest ones. In your opinion, was this boorish?

GENTLE READER: Yes. Had you wished to register your disapproval you could have written her a dry letter of thanks; had you wished to register extreme disapproval, you could have returned the present. Miss Manners is afraid that “Thanks, slut," is not a proper communication.

Took Charlie to our vet to get his latest shots & all that. They deemed him perfect, and the tech took him in the back to meet everybody because he’s so cute. Then he took a 💩 on the exam room floor and fell asleep in my lap. 😂

I’m figuring out this puppy’s routine, and it mostly seems to be either 100% all-out crazy zoomies or sleeping. Zoomies will resume when he wakes up. 😂

Ways in which puppies are like babies: Charlie played like a maniac this morning, then started whining. I picked him up & swayed until he fell asleep in my arms. Then I set him down & he immediately woke up. 😂 My human children did this EXACT thing.

Before we had our dog put down last month, I had sworn up and down that she was the first and last dog I'd ever have. So of course I'm already looking at rescues on Petfinder. Big ol' hypocrite, that's me.
