Dylan Clark is one of the most exciting names in my YT feed—a master at directing creepy short horror films (w/his best, Portrait of God, getting a feature-length adaptation!) His latest, CATCHER, uses a recurring nightmare to set the mood & even if the plot isn't surprising, the scares are 4*

Norway takes the brutal Brothers Grimm version of Cinderella & tells it from THE UGLY STEPSISTER's point of view. With some truly gruesome body horror, Myren's performance is fascinating to watch (sometimes w/ my eyes covered). The film takes the idea Beauty is Pain to eleven 2.5* #ODR 37/50 109/125

THE PEANUT BUTTER FALCON is a feel-good movie with excellent performances from LaBeouf, Gottsagen & Johnson (wish Haden Church had more to do). How many times has Bernthal played this same part? A lot of sweet moments that mostly felt predictable (especially Eleanor's coincidental following) 3.5*

Fuck the police. Fuck for-profit prisons. Fuck power-tripping prison guards. Fuck Steve Marshal. Fuck Kay Ivey. THE ALABAMA SOLUTION is 2 hours of horrendous first-hand accounts of the mistreatment & murders in AL state prisons. Sad how the 13th Amendment still allows slavery 4.5* #ODR 36/50 108/125

I had trouble connecting to THE SECRET AGENT because the film doesn't explain anything for half its run time, but the suspense made the time fly by & the ending delivered. Moura is incredible (especially in the epilogue), as were Maria & Francisco. Goes well w/ I'm Still Here 4.5* #ODR 35/50 107/125

I had heard THE TESTAMENT OF ANN LEE was a musical about the Shaker movement, but I was not prepared for the types of songs included here. Seyfried gives a career-best performance & Pullman is good as her brother. The story felt very surface-level, missing a lot of details with an abrupt ending 3*

Didn't realize GIANT was describing the movie's runtime! An epic Texan tale of love, wealth & racism—Taylor, Hudson & Dean span decades as families grow & riches are found. It's sad seeing a grey-haired Dean knowing so many great roles were taken from us. The story didn't always make sense... 3.5*

Fire is hard to fake, so the VFX nom for THE LOST BUS feels well-deserved (despite Greengrass's camerawork obfuscating the effects). The random real footage drew me out every time & the writing doesn't live up to McConaughey & Ferrera. Way too many scenes of kids screaming 2.5* #ODR 34/50 103/125

RELENTLESS made me realize perennial Oscar bridesmaid DIANE WARREN wrote way more songs than I knew. The doc does its best trying to find what makes her tick, but she's a stubborn woman with no process—just an Asperger's-driven work ethic & never-ending desire for an Oscar 3.5* #ODR 33/50 102/125

If ever there was a film that shouldn't be on Netflix, it's Netflix's TRAIN DREAMS. Started it a month ago, but knew I couldn't watch it w/home distractions & I wish I could have seen these shots on a big screen. Edgerton was robbed of a nom—I loved his performance (and Macy's) 3* #ODR 32/50 101/125

ARCO felt like a Ghibli-lite story of time travel, friendship & environmental horrors. I wish AMC had the subbed version, but #ODR racers can't be picky, I guess. I'd have loved some more world-building (in either timeline). The rainbow trio were at times both annoying & hilarious. 3.5* 31/50 97/125

THE DEVIL IS BUSY is a depressing look at a day in the life of the security & medical staff of an Atlanta abortion clinic as they simply try to administer health care while dealing with racist Hwite Christians (is that redundant?). Smart to focus on a Christian worker 3.5* #ODR 30/50 96/125

My wife asked if THE SMASHING MACHINE was about that wrestler who went crazy & killed his family and I kinda wish it had been. Not sure why this story had to be told. Johnson's fine (aided by the amazing makeup), Blunt does great w/every cliche she's given & Bader's a surprise 2.5* #ODR 29/50 95/125

ELIO didn't quite have the Pixar magic to make me fall in love on first viewing but it had many cute moments, some moving scenes & a lot of interesting character designs. Glordon was a fun creation (warmongering tardigrade race?!) as was the clone. Wish my kids loved this more 3.5* #ODR 28/50 94/125

I only learned who Andrea Gibson was after their passing, so imagine my surprise when COME SEE ME IN THE GOOD LIGHT was a doc about them & their partner dealing with the ups & downs of their diagnosis. Such wonderful poetry—Would've loved if their song also had gotten nom'd 4* #ODR 27/50 93/125

THE ARISTOCATS is a classic Disney film I'd never seen (but glad to see they reused the racist cats from Lady and the Tramp). A lot of fun songs, some gorgeous animation, plus a decent story with the world's dumbest butler. Harris sounded great (even if it's still Baloo's voice)—Gabor not so much 3*

The car racing scenes of F1 are thrilling & I wish I had seen them on the big screen (almost makes me want to get into real F1!). Pitt, Condon & Bardem all do great work with what they're given, but the story is predictable dad-movie fare w/ very little reality mixed in. 3.5* #ODR 26/50 92/125

I'm sure I saw LADY AND THE TRAMP when I was younger but beyond the spaghetti scene, I couldn't remember much. Fun watching Lady grow up with Jim Dear & Darling and even more fun watching the prim & proper licensed dog slum it with the strays. Shame those cats had to be so racially insensitive. 3.5*

My kids saw ZOOTOPIA 2 months ago w/o me & now I finally realize I need to show them The Shining! Doesn't quite live up to the original, but still a fun mystery exploring new corners of Zootopia, expanding the world & talented voice cast! Feimster was a highlight alongside B&G 3.5* #ODR 25/50 88/125

Hudson was a joy to watch (even if NBP spoiled her character's arc) in SONG SUNG BLUE & I'm thrilled she got another nom. Jackman does great in these singing roles (he should do more!), but the story hit a bunch of biopic beats & the timing felt off with some bits forgotten 3* #ODR 24/50 87/125

PERFECTLY A STRANGENESS got nom'd for best Doc Short film & it's the worst I've seen so far. Following a bunch of donkeys as they explore a planetarium w/ time-lapse space photos does not a documentary make. I always love space shots and there are some good ones here, but why? 2.5* #ODR 23/50 86/125

I know FRANKENSTEIN was one of del Toro's dream projects, but he needed to trim down the first "half" which dragged on far too long. Elordi's Creature was fascinating to watch, but I sighed when he told Isaac HE was the monster. Not sure what Waltz was doing here nor did I spot Goth's 2nd role 3.5*

Live Action Short #Shortlist - Felt good about TWO PEOPLE EXCHANGING SALIVA's chances (and was vindicated—weird titles often get nom'd). In a world where kissing's illegal, people chew garlic to avoid temptation, and money's replaced by slaps to the face, two people find love with grim results 4.5*

Live Action Short #shortlist - BEYOND SILENCE takes the feeling of not being able to speak up after sexual abuse and makes it literal by making one of the victims deaf. With the help of her sister, Eva finally speaks up after a year or two, only to find out her mentor has been silent for decades 4*

Doc Short #Shortlist. Fuck Donald. Fuck Elon. Fuck Marco. Fuck every bleeding-heart Republican who wants to "save the children" but only while they're fetuses. ROVINA'S CHOICE focuses on one tragic story among millions caused by the closure of USAID. Wish there was more focus on the perpetrators 4*
