A photo of the poetry journal The Rialto Her Family and Mine We were on an endless hike upward in the August countryside, slogging toward a promised moment when the pine dark would clear unveiling rolling postcard hills and it would all be worth it. I could hear my friend behind me in our single-file crooked line, her breathing labored. Mine was silent. And it made me feel good about myself. Her struggling. I must have done more in the past to deserve my present ease: worked harder to be in better shape, more capable of the climb. We plodded on for some time, then I glanced back and saw her five-year-old on her shoulders.

Answering Her Question My sister taught me a parenting trick for when kids ask a difficult question like “Is Santa Claus real?” or “What is sex?” Simply ask, in earnest, “What do you think?” and listen. At the least, it buys you time. My daughter, three, in the car one evening, is silent. Then asks, “Mama, will I die?” I just drive. Try to keep the car tethered to the earth. Somehow the trick surfaces within me and I ask, “What do you think?” In the rearview mirror I see her smile looking out at the purple sky. She says “I think I will never die.” I tell her “That’s what I think, too.” And I do, I do.

Some Nights the Entire Gravel Driveway is covered with fat orange slugs. Or frogs. Or snails. You can’t run to the car barefoot for something left there. You can’t step outside to see the Milky Way splashed on the sky without a flashlight. You have to look down in the country. In the dark, you can slice your foot open shattering a snail’s shell like my toddler daughter did. Forget all squeamishness: worse things than stalked eyes and slime are smeared across the night, waiting for you. It’s easy to kill without meaning to, as easy as it is to die—always— wherever you are—in the dark, a car, the light—easy as the turn of a wheel—

It means so much to me to learn that this little poem of mine has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize by New Ohio Review 🥹
Sometimes it feels so animal— the peach tree trunk breaking our fence in half to make room for itself, wisteria reaching its fingers into the windows when we look away. Waist-high nettles lie in wait at the property line, a field of them, teeth bared. The trail through the valley disappears in summer under brambles that catch and tear our clothes and skin. I chose to have kids. To replicate myself, spread— that’s what life does, from the most innocent forget-me-not to the knotweed we fought for years, painting poison onto each leaf in spring. Of course life wants to keep living, wants to live so much it will kill for it.

Here’s another poem of mine in the new issue of New Letters
Hands You swat away so many hands, and then you stop. You’re tired. And they’re so insistent. You let them do what they’re trying to do. You let them reach inside you and take out what they want. Or to put in what they want. Sometimes they drop a nail while they’re working and just leave it. You only know it’s there when you see it on an x-ray one day. During the surgery to remove it, you find another nail. And another: a breadcrumb trail you start to follow back to that first acquiescence, that first night you resigned yourself to the hands. You find each nail you find just leads to another.
